Willie's first appearance is fairly understated. His accent is not as thick as it will become, and he's quite calm - even the couple of angry rants he has in this episode are fairly tame compared to what will come.

Like many long lasting characters, his creation was an accident - Castellaneta apparently tried Spanish and Swedish accents for this one-off janitor character before settling on Scottish, and a lot of his personality spiralled naturally our of that, leading to him being one of the world's most famous Scotsmen. I live in Scotland myself, and we have embraced him for the most part - he's over the top and exaggerated, not especially representative of us as a people, but in many ways just having our wee country regularly acknowledged on a famous American cartoon is an honour.

He's responsible for one of the most culturally impactful lines the show ever had:

"Cheese-eating surrender monkeys" was a phrase used against the French a lot around the time of the Iraq War, it became so ubiquitous that it's easy to forget that it originated here. Many lines from the show are quoted in every day conversation, but this one may have been used a lot by people who never watched the show in their life.

Willie's role has increased as the show continues, going from weird side character to the main focus of some episodes, such as season 17's "My Fair Laddy" or season 35's "Ae Bonny Romance", in which he got married. He even got his own short in 2014 around the time of Scotland's independence referendum.

Willie is a good representation of many Simpsons characters: one note, but a note played so often that we love it. There's a reason he was once named the most recognisable Scot in the world, somehow this accidental creation really resonated with people enough that he kept coming back, becoming one of the most known characters in one of the most known TV shows.
