We last caught a glimpse of a Space Mutants film back in season 1's "The Telltale Head" - there they were watching Space Mutants 4, which featured a scene near identical to this one (except less Australian).
As far as I can tell, Australian sequels to American films weren't really a thing - the only example that comes to mind is "The Rescuers Down Under", which released a year before this episode, although hardly in the same genre as Space Mutants. This is however in line with the trend of America's infatuation with the Australians in the late 1980s, as detailed in season 6's "Bart vs Australia".
