It's a complicated answer because it's not just about having your dog do various behaviors and tasks, but teaching him to do these things in a variety of contexts (around distractions, in new places like outside etc...) For that reason, treats are recommended any time you change up a variable. If you really go out of your way, you can phase out treats in these various contexts within about a year. Of course, you can quickly phase out treats while asking your dog to do things in your house and free of distractions in most cases.
