This brings back memories… Because I belong to the “GenX” cohort, I spent half my childhood in the analog age (vinyl records, getting up to change TV channels with a knob, typewriters, phones with actual dials) and the other half in the digital (CDs, IR remotes, word processors, 56K modems). In other words, I lived through the dawn of the information age. After listening to your Bill Gates episodes, I realize how much of my “choices” were limited by the behind-the-scenes shenanigans of Microsoft, IBM, and Apple (all of them had anti-competitive practices). I’ve learned during this time that the best product does not always win in the end. In the beginning, the microcomputer world had a wider playing field. Few people remember Commodore or Atari… there were even offerings from Coleco and Timex… and many others I can’t remember now. At the time of the Apple II, Commodore 64 and Atari 800 were superior offerings for home users; both had color graphics and sound out of the box, you only needed a TV for a monitor, and had early implementations of “plug-and-play” peripherals. Later the Commodore Amiga was used to make the CGI for Babylon 5 TV show… the Atari ST allowed more compatibility with PC hardware… The business world (and consumers of the time) thought they were toys, but in reality, machines that had the graphics and sound capability to run games meant they were capable machines. However, I see that Microsoft, Apple, and IBM anticompetitive war against each other could have also affected the “little guys” as “collateral damage”. One memory in particular might be an example this… the Atari ST ran on Digital Research’s “GEM/OS”, an operating system that ran on multiple platforms including IBM PCs (GEM/OS apps theoretically “platform agnostic”), but I can’t help but wonder if Microsoft OEM policies mentioned in your podcast pretty much guaranteed GEM/OS wouldn’t catch on; just idle speculation… I have not proof if this was the case.
