Solving Houdini solving a Rubik Cube

As you probably noticed I was a bit silent dealing with moving - fighting with my old landlord about details and getting the new home ready for baby No. 2 ... which arrives 1 month from now... holy... time runs quick!

But back to the topic - the time windows were too short for recording but I did found time to do some research as with the loop noise. On a coding channel I found someone trying to do this in java and felt it is a great exercise to transport it into Houdini and making the solving algorithm in VEX. Maybe I need python aswell but I am not sure.

The first issue I had to solve was Houdinis nature to animate things.  This was a difficulty for me to grasp in the beginning because my programmers perspective on this made me think the wrong way.

Now I found a way that allows me to create an animation sequence from start to finish and send that to the solver who works through it.

Think about solving the cube where you need 20 different rotations to complete the sequence.

I prepared a setup that is able to do that. Next I have to create easy to trigger rotations of the possible moves that react to that sequence.

When that is done I can play around through the selfsolving cube into an rbd sim - for the fun of it. And in the end we put this into redshift.

In the end this topic might become to big to cram into a simple video but maybe a short patreon course if you are interested.

Cheers

Dave
