Yeah, there were no real lines as they were completely surrounded by the Germans. The only reason they were not ground under initially was that the Germans had low fuel reserves so they didn't want to waste it on a direct assault if they could just get them to surrender by just encircling them...a big mistake. The main German force had already moved west and they didn't have enough forces to take the town. The 101st was still holding the town and in fact the Germans had actually less troops around the town than the 101st by the time Patton arrived. They weren't rescued, they were reinforced.
