Cops are not a monolith. Some will deescalate, some will escalate, and there's a whole spectrum in between. Training and work culture also varies enormously from department to department.
As for the kid, I don't think he did anything wrong. Defending yourself against an attacker is a basic human right, and you don't lose that right just because you need a weapon to level out the playing field.

In my opinion depends on the cop's morals,values,training,intelligence,experience and ability to restrain himself in stressfull situations. Yet even then, you could argue that a wrong or impulsive decision can always happen depending on what the cop goes through in his personal life. In that circumstance he should be removed from patrolling. I understand that the cop wanted to protect the fellow students. But, i don't know why he felt the need to resort to his gun immediately.. Communication and controlling the situation are thrown out the window. A taser was never an option.. And we all know why, a cop in the US has 6 months of training while in other parts of the world like for example in Europe, its 2 years.
