2024-04-29 17:56:21 +0000 UTCI’m going to be the odd man out… If you had all boys I would consider it. BUT… with a little girl I feel like a woman might be a better fit. I have 4 daughters and I know what they need on a day to day basis. I don’t know if I would ever feel comfortable with a male who isn’t their father helping them with personal issues… I don’t know, this is a hard one.

2024-04-25 20:32:08 +0000 UTCGet the bro-pair! My sons are 8 and 15, and I WISH they'd had the opportunity to see a man functioning as a primary caregiver when they were younger. You'll be so grateful later when they aren't programmed to put the expectation of caregiving solely on women/you.

2024-04-25 19:49:57 +0000 UTCMy male cousin and my son have both babysat. They are both just great with children and it’s so much fun to see them interact and how much the kids (both boys and girls) love them! I say do it gal.

2024-04-25 14:08:20 +0000 UTCI am pro bro-pair! My husband worked in youth programs for 20+ years (granted it was not in the home) but he has the sweetest relationship with all our nieces as well as endless patience playing legos, board games, and video games with our son and nephews! I was a nanny for years and am not half as gentle and present with kids as my husband.

2024-04-25 14:04:05 +0000 UTCI personally wouldn’t mind a male caregiver when my kids are older and understand boundaries better. Best of luck!!

2024-04-24 22:27:47 +0000 UTCWe had a great male babysitter. He loved to make movies and “commercials “ with the kids. We still watch them and they’re grown. He is also a father now, great man.

2024-04-24 21:26:04 +0000 UTCRemember Charles in Charge!? Can't remember if there was ever drama behind the scenes but Charles took care of the kids! Seriously though, I understand the hesitation but also think it would good for the kids. Can't wait to hear what you decide.

2024-04-24 20:44:59 +0000 UTCthere are a couple bropairs in our neighborhood and they are friends with our aupair. they are lovely, but so are all the au pairs that are friends with ours! i think the personality fit is the most important and that can be found in either gender.

2024-04-24 14:21:34 +0000 UTCI asked my sister who has had 4 au’pairs. She also considered a man for her son. I do think there is really no way to judge a person who takes care of ur kids but yes we all think women would be better — for no valid reason than history.

2024-04-24 12:27:32 +0000 UTCI wouldn't rule out the bro'hare if he is a good fit for your family. I work in pediatric cardiology and have male coworkers who are wonderful, caring, and so professional with our patients! Unfortunately gender does not determine someone's motives and character, a femal nanny could be just as problematic or dangerous as a manny. Honestly going into a career as a manny is signing himself up for heavy screening and being watched under a microscope - makes me feel like he would have nothing but good intentions here.

2024-04-24 11:42:55 +0000 UTCFirst and foremost, anyone can be a pedophile. I think gender here is less of an issue and it’s more of what society has told us is normal. I am in the middle of becoming a foster parent (I’m single and own my own business). I’m actively interviewing for a nanny (one or two) as the first placement will be happening soon — and in order for us to have food on the table etc. there will be a nanny situation in our household (mostly for after school care and on call). Especially since Andrea is going through an agency (some how that feels safer; either way, I’d run all the background checks possible for a man/ woman/ non-binary person), my vote is for whomever feels the safest, has the most amount of appropriate work experience, and fits in well to your family dynamic. I also think it’s important to continue to show children that “gender normatives” are not normative at all; and in fact are based on puritanical societies, and therefore misogyny. Long story short, I will absolutely hire a bro-pair/ nanny if he/ they fit into our dynamic and hectic schedule.
