Patreon Exploit and Stolen Art

So, just to let you guys know, I've had a problem with a very obnoxious exploit on Patreon, where basically it's very easy for someone to get access to Patreon-locked stuff for subscribers, without having to pay a dime for it.

There's also been an issue now where someone is taking Artwork from Patreon locked stuff and posting it publicly.  Thankfully I am not part of that list.

I still intend to post the comics a day early here, for you guys. That's not going to change.  If someone steals the comics that become available to the public anyway, they're just giving me free advertising.

However, if I do anything in the future that is going to be Patron Subs Only, until Patreon fixes this issue, I will likely be posting it on a password protected site, either my BT forums or something else.  It will require a little more work for me, but it will hopefully keep the assholes out.

Let me know what you guys think about this.

This reminds me of how old computer games used to have codesheets that a player would have to use in-game, to prove they purchased a legitimate copy of the game. Eventually game developers realized that that didn't work -- pirates would just buy one legitimate copy and spread the codesheet around, and all the publisher ended up doing is annoying the legitimate customers. I think this is similar. If your art is awesome enough, having a password-protected site won't keep the assholes out, not when all an asshole needs to do is to pay you some money to become a Patron. Then they take the art and post it on a public site. I think you'll just end up causing yourself more stress when some asshole ends up doing this. To really make this work, you'd need to have a different password for each Patron, and each Patron would get their exclusive version of the art with some watermark on it, so that you could then track down who leaked the image. This is waaaaay too much work, in my humble opinion. I think you should just go whatever causes you the least stress. Do the password thing if it makes you feel better, but if it were me, I wouldn't bother.

long as the Patreon supporters are able to view it, I support whatever you need to do.

Sounds good!

If you find someone trying that with your work, just rickroll them with fake bonus content multiple times. I guess they might give up quite quickly. Password protected content on BT forums seems like a more robust solution however. I'm fine with that :-)
