Niixa hasn't been able to use AEF at any point she wasn't Xarax-Hil. Refer back to previous comics where she was in some other form.

When Niixa attacked him, I think he somehow siphoned her power and implanted the curse in turn. Something to note is that Ahkiketa hasn't demonstrated any of Niixa's magic yet. I'm beginning to think that she can't at all. But if Kaletaka goes on the offensive first, then somehow the countermagic doesn't work? Edit: I don't think Endymion was the only one to strike a deal.
