Multi (material) colour prints…

I am interested in finding out whether you guys are interested in multi colour prints…

I have just started printing on an X1C from bamboo labs with the AMS multi material unit.

Going forward I think this technology will start to become more common and affordable and I plan on integrating multi colour comparable prints into my future designs but I’d like to know what portion of patrons have access to this capacity at this point in time.

And if you don’t, whether you’d like to see the prints designed with this in mind so you can consider it in your future printer purchasing decisions as the technology inevitably gets more accessible.

Feedback please.

I wonder how this would work for making some of the other prints, such as the tower systems sections, the slim line wall mounted ones, grow spikes, gutter ends and even the printed Hooch buckets, white on the outside and black on the inside to help with heat but also light infiltration...?

100% just joined your patreon and brough the X1C to print your models with!

I use the AMS much much more for the automatic change over when you run out of a reel. To me that’s the “goated feature”

That looks fun but complicated- still trying to master basic 3D printing with Creality Max Neo and the troubleshooting process (especially with the moss pole) Tried to make a color print of moss pole with Silk PLA which just made spaghetti. I’m more interested in simple printing that works here (and learning how to comment on a message board). But don’t let it discourage you from what you want to put out there. Thanks for sharing your projects in printing and hydro!

Hello H,

Lonie

With a delta and a CR10 I have not bit the bullet on multicolor. The other consideration is I typically only do function-use designs and prints and for the most part have no need for color in those designs.

Hi Hooch, I have been running my X1C for over a year. Let me know if you have any questions about it.

Peter A Corder

I was only talking to the Tech guy at school about this last week. I had a weaving card I wanted to make with different colours in each corner. I ended up with a paint pen.

Jacinta Hohnke

No machine with AMS at present, but if there were multi material prints I would simply do a manual change. In the future would like to add an AMS capable printer to my lineup. Keen on ideas you have in mind!

Tim

As long as there are still single colour prints I don't care. I only print a single colour for now since that's all I got. Haven't justified buying an AMS yet.

Magrath

The X1C with AMS will be my next printer.

I prefer single color and use a m600 if I want to change colors. When I moved on from my ender I went larger print bed (500x500) instead of multi color or multi-head.

James Abella

I also have an X1C. I'm definitely interested.

I run an X1C & AMS, it has been busy for the last week adapting some of the RGGS to UK pipework. So far i've found very little use for multi-colour as almost all of my prints are utilitarian, even base colour is usually whatever i have. Labelling for things such as plant tags is great but with so much variety out there I wonder about the ROI on time spent making specific ones. For example "Tomatoes" is fine if you grow one type, but becomes less useful if you need to differentiate 3 varieties, and lets be honest - those are the ones we need labels for. Multi-material is a better use, and i make extensive use for PLA as a support interface for PETG. Most of my AMS use is my own laziness in having it handle filament swaps. I would recommend the Bambu printers to anyone. The X1C changed 3D printing from an inconvenient hobby to a tool. My other printers had as many 'self upgrades' as they did functional production, the X1C has zero upgrades and every print has been functional with remarkably few failures.

I've got a P1S and AMS, would be interested in multi material where applicable more than multi colour personally; I try to keep printing costs for the garden as low as possible and multicolour will just increase costs for aesthetics. Something I'd appreciate even more would be text files in Google drive with links to the videos where you describe/use the parts in question. Took me embarrassingly long to find the video for the 3D printed version of the RGGS 😂

i print on X1C with AMS for more then a year.. multi color prints look great but with every color change the print time increases drastically :/ box for cards with sun on the side - single color 3 hours, 2 colors white box & yellow sun 11 hours, more than 150 color changes :/ it is more convenient to change color by layers and go down with the amount of color changes... so printing with multi color is nice but only consider when it is worth :) and multi material? you can print only materials with the same temperature which is pretty limiting... i have thought about some combination of PETG with TPU, but TPU can not be loaded via AMS, so does not work :/ and with the materials i am mostly printing with (PLA, PETG, TPU, ABS, ASA) i have not found any use case for multimaterial printing what are your thoughts and ideas?

Tomáš Jasaň

I have a dual extruder printer, but it is only one of several printers. I would be interested in a multicolour version of a design, but I think there should always be a single colour version. I foresee the vast majority of prints being single colour preferred, especially where multiple prints are concerned, even if dual colour is available.

David Kok

I use the terminology interchangeably as the tech can be used for both. But there will definitely be multi material prints as well. I’m looking at you petgCF

Mitchell Tomkins

Multi material would interest me more...

Hugues Ballant

I already do multicolor prints without Ams so I would Be interested. Currently I just change the colors and manually purge on my ender 3 v3 SE. I’ve even changed from Petg to TPU to print a gasket in place. So those of us who don’t have an AMS could still benefit from this. IMO

I print on a Bambu A1 Mini with AMS. I would use the multicolor, as long as it fits my baby print bed! (180x180)

Kelculus

I would design the prints keeping this in mind. I’m not a fan of purged or support filament, so most of my designs would only use colour where it is single layered on the top or bottom of a surface. Plant tags or the above practical application for instance.

Mitchell Tomkins

I do most of my printing on the same Bambu X1C with AMS. I have great success with it. As for color prints depending on the orientation of the print it may do several hundred color changes with a purge every color change so it uses up a fair share of filament. If you orient it so it changes color at a certain layer height you can minimize this. I do really like how it can load multiple spools of the same color and when one runs out it automatically starts a new spool and never misses a beat.
