THE CASE OF MARY KAY LETOURNEAU: TRUE LOVE OR TOTAL MANIPULATION? - PODCAST #7

The unapologetic relationship between elementary schoolteacher Mary Kay Letourneau and her student victim was one that stirred the pot in the eyes of the public. Don't be fooled.

THE CASE OF MARY KAY LETOURNEAU: TRUE LOVE OR TOTAL MANIPULATION? - PODCAST #7

Comments

That was truly very interesting, Zach. Thank you.

Lumpster’s Mouse

All about manipulation, the little guy never stood a chance. This is why we need to protect the young as they don't have the skills to do it themselves. Best pod out of the 7 I've heard. Dang. That wasgood.

Gordon Bonnett

OMG Mary Kay is PSYCHOTIC!!! She is so crazy, I remember her interview when they were older; MaryKay " Who was the boss??" , Vili " Well this is awkward" She holds NO accountability, no self reflection, she probably got what she deserved. I feel so bad for Vili and their beautiful girls. They were probably abused so much by her, she is VERY manipulative!!

Kristen DILLIGAF

I'm in the process of catching up since I'm new to your Patreon, and I feel like I'm commenting a lot. I was gonna lay off the comments on this one.. until I heard you say BPD when referring to Bipolar Disorder. Just wanted to let you know that the acronym BPD is used only for Borderline Personality Disorder, which is something completely different. Keep killin' it, though, man.✌

Sunn Kendzoria

Wow, I thought your comment was a bit harsh until I just heard the interview clip and now I’m sooo glad that victim is free from her.

Finnamon

I want to comment about the teacher hanging out with your brother: sometimes, teachers will reach out to children they may find troubled or possibly have a tough home life. When there is no foul play involved, it can be very helpful to a young person to have the direct influence of someone older (think Boys and Girls Club). Hopefully, your bro’s teacher’s intentions were innocent but I totally understand why the situation would raise an eyebrow and I’m curious as to whether anymore details come out from your brother about that relationship.

Finnamon

I totally remember this and there was a movie...then got married! Ewwww

Sandee Trivigno

Fyi, BPD = Borderline Personality Disorder. Really digging these podcasts. Thoughtful commentary while maintaining a conversational tone. I appreciate your work!

Kendal K.

Glad she’s gone.

Emmy Nem

Teacher taking out a kid for something like that aint too weird kinda depends, ofc its not normal but kids who have special needs at school concentration problems or something like that, usually do stuff like this sometimes with the kids but I have never seen a teacher and one kid though...that`s suspect for sure

kenneth malvik

This case is so crazy. The wildest part for me is that she had a son not much older than Villi, which means that she chose to leave her family for a boy she could have birthed, What? Yikes.

weepingwillows21

I remember this case when I was younger , watched the lifetime movie about it , still blows my mind to this day, love hearing in depth points of view on it , deff was disgusting and someone should of helped him stay away from her . I didn’t even know she died last year, thank you for this, it really made me think again about this case.

Apryl Hernandez

It’s crazy how she got out on such a good plea the first time she was sentenced. She should have just been thrown in jail for a long time

Zack Howe

I bought this was really intresting to listen to and the levels of Manipulation that c9me from female predators are just mind blowing especially the “who’s the boss”, that panicked me a lot hearing that having my own past experiences with being manipulated as a child, I really feel for Villy and what he went through

CapsaicinCoffee

Agreed it says at the end of the episode that if you been a victim to seek help. But the show contradicts the message by making it seem okay

Angel Angelov

There's a TV series on Hulu right now called 'A Teacher' and it's so fucked up. You guys should check it out. It's from the teachers point of view and it makes you think that everything is okay. It makes you upset when she get caught cause it shows them 'falling in love' and it's just awful to watch. This was a great podcast though! very well said

Samantha Lipscomb

This has nothing to do with the podcast but I work with Registered sex offender parolees, basically I do security and they all live there. There’s a young guy there that looks soooooo much like you. It’s so ironic I just think about it all day 🤣 told all my coworkers about it so, hopefully they come support 💕

Nicole Allen

Very good podcast. I have to admit, even I was thinking "Well I mean they look happy don't they?", but after hearing every little detail that you point out about Vile talking differently when not with Mary Kay and Mary Kay talking down to him and basically queuing him to admit that he was the boss when clearly he wasn't the boss. She always was the boss and still was the boss during that interview. I feel for the guy now he basically had an owner for a huge portion on his life.

Connor Anderson

Such a good episode! This case never fails to infuriate me. It’s unreal how dismissive our society seems to be of female predators. No one ever asks if the victims are okay. It’s just a mix of ”oh she was just ignored by her husband!” and ”that kid should be happy”. Idk when people will realise how damaging that stuff is to a child. Also, biologically speaking, there’s a theory that females develop at a rate higher than males (physically and psychologically). However, people still assume that boys should be able to deal with sex (or rape) better than girls. Not saying that either sex can deal with being sexual abused as a child. Just a point I wanted to make, because I’ve been wondering about that.

Viivi

This story was made into a movie, I remember watching it years ago. It’s sooo messed up!

Holly Cornett

even the clip of that interview gave me the fucking creeps. i’m a 21 year old girl and the thought of dating someone under the age of 20 makes me uncomfortable. when i was in highschool there were a lot of female teachers that would joke around with the boys in a “flirtatious” way and it always bothered me. if it was a male they would have been called creeps. no excuses for a 35 year old woman to be seeking out 12/13 year old boys.

Olivia Bockey

Okay, I jumped on that one. She died.

doomrider

Ugh, that clip! Jesus. Makes me wonder what kind of mother she is to their children..

doomrider

Wow, I just watched the interview with Mary and Villi and I have to say, I feel so sorry for him. Seems like she and her lawyer wanted to make him feel guilty of this. Humans can be so cruel and disgusting.

Carina

Wow Sounds like a jerry springer segment

Jesus Guzman

Seeing updates from you always SPARKS JOY for me. Another great podcast, always looking forward to moarrrrrr.

Dolly

Hard same. People love using mental illness as a get-out-of-jail-free card for their behavior as if there aren't way more examples of people fighting the same mental issues WITHOUT being creepy monsters about it.

Dolly

YIKES. I want to give her the benefit of the doubt, 'cuz like.. being a teacher is like being a parent and wanting to keep the kids in your life and watch them grow into adults, but that can so easily be a cover for some ulterior motives. Really puts a pit in my stomach with going to the parties.

Dolly

Its definitely sad and the fact that he stayed with her until he was in his late 30s is devastating. He had no time to really reflect on the situation nor mourn the loss of his childhood. She had issues and even in the interview you can just tell how emotionally exhausting this woman is

Darei Wassa

I chuckle at every one of your silly jokes, Zach 😆 All supporting adults here. Love your content 👍

Rebekah Goode

So sad for Billy. Also did you know she died in July 2020 to colon cancer.

I remember vividly the Mary Kay Letourneau thing. How they were constantly being caught in the back of cars, etc. And it was always like "what are you doing, sicko?? Stop!" And I know in hindsight a teacher doing stuff with a student after school seems really creepy but back then it wasn't see that way. Yes pedophiles will take advantage of that but back then it wasn't a big deal. When I was in 3rd grade (1988 ish) our teacher rewarded us. We voted on our reward. Some kids went to a restaurant with her and then roller skating. The rest of us had a sleepover at her house. It was our idea. We ate pizza and went to sleep. It just wasn't seen as weird back then. But with the internet, cameras everywhere, cameras in everyone's pocket, more light is being shown on pedophiles. Which is good. Should be. But, it really was different then. The Mary Kay Letourneau case really, like never before, made people stop and think twice about letting their kids just hang out after school with teachers.

Christie

Another super duper troubling case that I never knew about. Wow. The sickness and insanity of her justifications are just revolting. No sympathy for any predator, male or female. Thanks for covering this case, Zach! In lighter sentiments, hope you have a great holiday. ❄️

JADA

100% total manipulation. Great podcast, Zach! On a side note, I hope your New Year's resolution includes being more cawtious since you got assaulted by a group of commies and a predator this year lol

Slow Loris

I won't tell the full story, but this reminded me too much of a 14-year-old girl I was friends with when I was 16. She actively sought out men in their 30s or 40s to have various sexual experiences with for over three years. Everything she did was "consensual" but it messed her up in a huge way. I dated her for awhile when I was 22 (she was 20) and as much as I loved her, those problems stemming from her past were too much for her to overcome. It took her another 24 years before she was mentally capable of handling a real relationship and luckily she is now happily married. A child of any gender can not consent to sex, period. They think they know what they are doing, but they don't. Thanks for another great podcast, Zach!

Shards of a Broken Life

Good stuff my guy. Just got your Anxiety War Raw sticker in the mail, much love! Going to slap that bad boy on my wife’s laptop!

Auzie

I have bipolar depression and will never understand how people can use it as an excuse to commit crimes, especially at this level. My disorder doesn’t make me want to groom and rape kids so I can’t imagine that it would cause pedophilia in other people. Disgusting

Sofia Ramirez

what a disgusting woman :( thanks for bringing awareness to female predators.

I had an odd female first grade teacher. She was young, but she followed my class through multiple grades. She followed my class to second grade, fifth grade, and she tried to follow us into middle school. Super nice teacher, but its odd that she followed my graduating class around like that. I saw her at some graduation parties as well. It just makes me wonder if she was a female predator.

Jarod

Probably late and someone has maybe already suggested it but would you consider doing like a video podcast where we can see you? That would be more interactive and gives more of a feel we’re all just hanging out?(: awesome podcast btw!

Fernanda Zamarripa

Total manipulation.

Celina Chimera

Never apologize, that's just the foot in the door to censorship.
