WHAT MORE CAN PARENTS DO TO PROTECT THEIR CHILDREN ONLINE? - PODCAST #66

Man, I remember when I discovered MSN chat rooms. It was so enticing to just chat with people that weren't bots, but as a child I didn't understand the risks. It's so creepy to realize now that most of them wanted to befriend a 10 year old and they were 20 yr+. I thought it was so cool at the time D:

I am a new parent but my goal is to teach my kiddo that I am a safe person to talk to for any reason. I can't control the world and the people in it but I can be good listener and set the president that I am here to help them grow.

When I was an early teen, so 2002-2004, I was in AOL chatrooms being mean to creeps, to the point, my screen name was banned forever hahaha

Hey buddy! Jody here and you're welcome for the kid! Just kidding 😂 😜 🤪 😅 😆 🤣 But in all seriousness, I have 4 kids, huge age ranges, youngest is 9 and oldest is 22! But my way of keeping them safe is a combo of a few things ( all my kids are good , no creeps got to them) . 1st- no smart phones until 9th grade. And when allowed, of course saftey measures/apps/watching in place. I put my foot down with this rule when my 22 year old was in 8th grade and first one to have a smart phone. After going through her phone, I actually was able to report a kid at her school who snap chat her a pic of himself holding a hand gun in the school bathroom! So that was very crazy and all her siblings were smart phone free until older after that... So my second prevention method is making sure every one of my kids at a very young age understands what a child molester is and how it can be ANYONE. Even your own family members. And if anyone ever tries anything (examples given, unfortunately a necessary evil) you tell mom and dad asap and no matter what someone says it's NEVER your fault and they will never be able to hurt/ kill us or make us mad at you. My third thing is telling my kids what happened to me when I was little, a family 'friend' molested me. Unfortunately my own parents waited too long to explain what a child molester is and literally the DAY they had the talk with me I told them what my abuser was doing.... Hopefully this info can help some folks 🙏

I think when I was like eight my Dad gave me the whole internet safety talk before I got to use it on my own. He still checked on me, checked the internet history- warned me about old creepy dudes who would pretend to be girls my age to get information out of me. I think learning about the dangers of the internet early in life can help protect children. Still don't think kids should ever be left alone on the internet though

Aight, this might sound like a stupid and/or repetitive question, but is there a way I can get this on my Podcast app?
