Hi everyone, I hope you got a chance to watch my latest video. My intent was to show some "real life" examples of how knowing about religion can be helpful in daily life (John Kerry, Bill Maher, and Reza Aslan). Since so many of my friends on Facebook and Twitter are religious studies students/scholars, the Bill Maher exchange exploded on my newsfeed last year. The general consensus among my friends was: "Dang it...I wish we were on stage for that conversation! We could have helped it go somewhere!" I showed the video to one of my classes last year at Boston University, and the students loved it. Together we analyzed Maher/Harris's perspectives vis-a-vis Affleck's perspective, trying to determine ways that the conversation could have reached a more fruitful conclusion. I figured I would try the same exercise on YouTube, and I hope it worked! I've never done a video where I cut away to another discussion for so long.
