Favorite episode of Euphoria ever!! Zendaya was in her BAG!
The comments already pointed some of this out but I wanted to add clarity to everything that was going on with Laurie.
First, Laurie always knew Rue wasn't going to be able to pay her back, that's why she threatened Rue when she gave her the suitcase that she would have people come kidnap her. This was foreshadowing that Laurie was more than a drug lord, that she is also a human trafficker.
When Rue returns to Laurie short on money, Laurie isn't surprised and she begins to "subtly" steer Rue in the direction of prostitution by saying things like "the good thing about being a woman is that you always have something people want." As she's saying this, we pan over to the strange bolted locked door in Laurie's apartment and we can hear scratching on the other side indicating that someone is ALIVE on the other side (most likely someone Laurie is sex trafficking).
When Rue is begging Laurie for pills, Laurie lies to her and says she only has intravenous morphine (we know it's a lie because we see the pills in Laurie's suitcase). Morphine is a sedative rather than a stimulant because she wanted to knock Rue out and make her weaker. You called it, Sophie, that Laurie purposely wanted to give Rue the intravenous morphine to get her hooked on something stronger than pills (shooting up is more addictive) and, as others pointed out, to make her look like a needle junkie.
So basically, Laurie's intentions were never to help Rue and she wasn't genuinely being nice. She had the worst intentions for Rue from the beginning. But Laurie is simply calculated enough to use kindness/calmness to disarm people so she doesn't seem like a threat. She even attempted to "bond" with Rue by telling her she used to be an addict too (no clue if she was telling the truth or not). Meanwhile the guys act as her muscle/enforcers.
Also, the parrots are creepy af because they basically act as alarm systems but they can also repeat the things they heard people say.

Laurie knew from the beginning when she lent her the suitcase that Rue wouldn't be able to pay it back, because she wanted to get her into prostitution. And she kept missing the needle on purpose to make her look like a needle junkie. That's when she says women have something to offer, that's alluding to her saying that she could sell Rue as a sex slave. And the parrots are there to make noise so no one escapes.

The episode Zendaya won her Emmy for! The dysfunction Rue caused felt so real, especially if you’ve dealt with someone who has mental/substance issues.

Zendaya was acTING! honestly i think rue was completely right in what she said about Jules.😶🌫️ Jules liked the feeling of being wanted and loved but its never seemed like she actually loved rue (romantically) and she is greedy when it comes to being wanted/attention. cheating with Elliot for example… just my opinion tho

Laurie the drug lord, she was NOT trying to help Rue, she had the pills that Rue wanted/needed to help her with her withdrawal- she wanted to get her hooked on intravenous opiates to possibly sell her pain into sex trafficking/ prostitution

this is honestly one of my favorite episodes alongside the season finale. this is the only episode in the entire show with 0 unecessary sex or nudity scenes and that's why its already up there for me. zendaya's acting was so good this ep and I was so mad at rue when watching this episode but I can't hate her. she's going through something I could never comprehend and the drugs bring out the worst in her. the only thing she did right this episode was exposing cassie because it was very much deserved and honestly funny to me.
but man I'm so lucky I got to see this episode premiered cause the discussions on twitter were hilarious.

Remember Rue saw Nate pick up Cassie when she was riding her bike. I think it was when they were running through that construction site
