FULL VIDEO: Pentatonix - You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch

Here's the full video of my reaction to Pentatonix's You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch 🎄

Unlike my video on YouTube which just includes the song reaction, this includes an additional live performance from The Evergreen Experience, 2021!

Hope you enjoy! 🎵

We use both feet and metres for measurements over here 😉

Sir Hairless

To translate to your language SH, that would be a 12 meter pole.

Miguel

Oh doll, you will LOVE the Making of Evergreen. (If it isn't already on here somewhere). It will answer a lot of your questions. I prefer these live versions over the studio - this was so much fun . Thank you

TheresaMarie

If I am not mistaken, then your "whoo" was exactly the one you liked from Scott in the live 12 days of Christmas performance... ☺️😎 Twins perhaps???

Katinka

Loved seeing and hearing the live performance to complement the studio version. As usual, your comments were spot on. It never ceases to amaze me how very closely their harmonies and solo parts echo the studio version. Just continues to show how extremely talented they are.

David Bangtson

Thanks Anita for your thoughts and for the info!

Sir Hairless

Great, thank you!

Sir Hairless

I'm afraid nearly all of my December videos will be Christmas ones! Thanks Dorothy, you too 🙏

It was so much fun to watch you watch this video! It's one of my favorites, and you do justice to it -- more than that, you illuminate it. Thank you for including the live reaction. I've seen one or two of their Christmas concerts, and I'm about to go to my next on Sunday. My birthday present to myself. Can't wait! There's a lot more to say, but commenters below have already said it all. :) It usually takes PTX to put me in the Christmas spirit, but your reactions already have me there. Thank you!

Mary Shields

Thank you for doing this one Sir H! I knew you would enjoy it. I think the best description for it is that it is just really cool! The video is really fun too. There is a behind the scenes for that one which shows them all coming into the studio to record their parts for the video. Matt mentions how hard it was to do that long spoken bit at the end because of having to lip sync it perfectly with the soundtrack! He said he knew he had to be spot on because the video would have such a close up on his face! I love the different rhythms and syncopations on this one, which you beautifully described. It's always so good to hear your analysis because it helps me understand better why I like certain types of music. This one makes me want to dance! I love the little gasps and face choreography especially from Mitch! I think someone else has mentioned that the Grinch was played by Kirstie's now husband, Ben (he was her fiance then). He was their videographer and did their behind the scenes videos. It was fab that you did the live version too. I love that Matt gets to demonstrate what a showman he is in this one! As one of the other commenters mentioned, I think this is one where Matt genuinely would be better than Avi as Avi has an incredible basso profundo voice but he isn't nearly as much of a performer as Matt is. I'd say the biggest performers of PTX are Matt and Scott, followed by Kevin and Kirstie and finally the lovely Mitch. Mitch was very shy after being bullied when he was younger and only began to come out of his shell when he started to do community youth theatre (which is how he met Scott when they were 8 years old and performing in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Scott was Charlie and Mitch was Mike Teevee!) Mitch does perform now, but he won't ever be as much of a showman as Scott. To be honest though, Mitch could stand in a beige room, wearing a manky t-shirt and scruffy jeans (not that he would!) and just sing the phone directory or the shipping forecast and I would still be mesmerised!! I just love his beautiful, unique voice. As you know, despite being a fan since the Sing Off, I only saw them live for the first time in London in May 2023, but they were phenomenal. They put on such a show and they interact with their audiences and they love and appreciate their fans. I think these days they do use some multi-tracking and occasionally sing against some backing tracks to make the sound fuller when they're in big auditoriums, but personally I think that's fair enough. If you watch any of their private performances that people have put on YouTube, you can see them at their most raw - they often don't even have a microphone (or sometimes just Kevin does) and they sound incredible so we know they're totally capable of singing everything completely live.

Anita Gupta

I'd also say he should react to I Saw Three Ships as well as the Prayer and Over the River first.

Tasia Barrett

I agree with that. Avi is phenomenal and I love his tone but he was never as much of a performer as Matt is.

Anita Gupta

Over the river was filmed in 2021. The grinch video was filmed in 2019 and the live was from 2021 but they're wearing very different clothes than the over the river video. The only thing that's similar is Kirstie's long braid.

Noelle doll44

Answers to some of your questions. No Mitch didn't grow his mullet that long. He's wearing extensions in the video. The grinch is being played by Kirstie's now husband. He was her boyfriend and the ptx videographer at the time. They've since gotten married and he's moved on from touring with ptx to focus on his own career. The cheering you're hearing at the beginning of the live is from the crowd but ever year they make one of the shows available to watch online so people who cant make the show can purchase it amd watch on veeps. This is from that online show and I'm guessing they edited out most of the crowd noise so it probably sounds pretty quiet compared to being there. Sometimes if you hear some layering in the live shows or see scott not moving his mouth, it's because they've began singing live over backing tracks of their own background parts since they sing in such large arenas now. They need the sound to be fuller to fill such large spaces. I just saw them in buffalo ny and that arena holds 19,000 people. *Editing to say one more thing. The recording of evergreen is not really spoiling anything. It mostly shows them working out parts and a tiny bit of singing in the studio. They hardly play any length of any songs and from what I'm remembering they only show bits of about 4/5 songs. Only two of which have videos that you'd likely react to. The rest are audio only videos and tend to get overlooked by reactors. The whole album is great though and earned them a grammy nomination for best traditional album. Definitely worth reacting to and won't spoil but if you're worried, watch the prayer and over the river first. Those are the only two with videos from the recording of evergreen. Those two songs are also done live on the evergreen experience.

Noelle doll44

An exception to this critique is The Prayer. They use a lot of studio tricks for the BVs but it still sounds stunning live, and not losing much in the translation.

Cassandra Dickman

Very keen to see you do joyful joyful live 😊

Something that I’ve noticed with their live performances of more recent songs is that there is a much bigger difference between their live and studio versions. I think they rely more on the studio now they’ve ever done in the past. Not that they ever sounded exactly the same, but I often used to prefer their live versions over studio. This can be really seen with Daft Punk. There are two live versions that you should check out just to clock the change in live quality compared to the original. First, is the Hollywood Bowl with Matt singing instead of Avi. Second, one with Avi and they are doing a private performance with no mics in like a green room where you can see the bathroom behind them. It’s amazing how much they are able to recreate studio tricks in both these vastly different live versions. Same with Hallelujah. The video is almost identical to their live performance from A Pentatonix Christmas Special seven or so years ago. I definitely still think they are amazingly talented and excellent performers, but I just sometimes wish they would go back to focusing on their live skills and not use as much multitracking/enhancements as they do now in studio.

Cassandra Dickman

The only song that may be spoiled by the recording of evergreen is The Prayer. The rest have too short of clips in the video to really spoil the song. So if you do the Prayer, I think you’re good for the recording watching. But it wouldn’t hurt to do Over the River first as well, because that will make the recording of evergreen info even that more interesting!

Stephanie M

They often have one or two of them do runs live that are not in the videos. I love how creative it is and how it says - we are live and it’s a blast! No need to copy a recording. Some sound very much like the vid, yes. But the here we are, live just for youness is oerfect

Jan Spoon Mage

Love the analysis and how much you enjoyed both performances! This is a song where Scott (who is not supposed to be a bass!) does such a good job covering the low end that you forget that the bass singer is singing lead for the entire song! While I've seen this version before (and I also have no idea who does the into voiceover), I've also seen a different live version where the action is much more extreme - they go out into the audience and the Grinch sits in someone's lap, and Matt has to "rescue" them! I'm sure it's a member of the crew, but it still plays very well with the audience at the time!

Badger77722

This was so much fun, neat to see Matt show his personality having fun with this performance. I think this is the year that Kirstie is pregnant with her daughter, and I’m not sure but I thought her now husband Ben (not Ben Bram, can’t think of his last name in this moment) played the Grinch character for some shows? No clue who voiced the intro on stage. Kirstie & Ben H are expecting baby #2 !

Shelley

As always love the informative reaction. I hadn’t seen this live version so that was really fun. They look to me that they’re in the same costumes as for the “Over the River” video. Really similar if not. I highly recommend watching that video as it’s another one with Lindsey Stirling. It’s not your run of the mill Over the river & through the woods….but then it’s Pentatonix so of course not! I love the video for Grinch & all their facial expressions & movement. They’re great at the little box windows format 😄 Can’t wait to go through the Christmas song season with you!

DonnaJ

Are you thinking about O Holy night??

TheJennilou68

The theatricality is next level. These guys are just the full package

Jas Pigot

I have been waiting to see your reaction to this since the beginning. LOL It'a very clear that you enjoyed it very much! Thank you for a super fun reaction!!!!!!

LorriR

There is one where matt sings high, im trying to remember which it is

B3thbakes

I enjoyed the emotion and how happy it made you and your face!

B3thbakes

I'm so glad you love it 😀💕

B3thbakes

Love this! The Grinch is Kirsties husband Ben who was the photographer for PTX, think he did a great job!

Becca

Kirstie was 3 months pregnant and was suffering from morning sickness during this show. She did so well! She is very pregnant in their current Xmas tour!!! You should check out a few of their live shows and see how well her breath control is. She is truly growing into an amazing asset to Mitch. I think their group is wonderful, as I have shared many times. I listen to them all the time.'

Patricia Shope

Yay, yay, yay!!!! I love this and showing the live version after is wonderful. I so appreciate there is a studio version you can crank on a great sound system. And i love their entertaining live versions showing how legit and expensive their talent is. I also appreciate you pointing out the differences, when there are multitracks on a recording or a recorded backing line (or fuller track) for a live version, etc.. Do they have live versions for their songs? Yup. Are they all identical to the studio versions? Uhm - no and that's not sacrilege. It's using and expanding on their immense talents as artists and musicians.

FlyFisher22

I’m skipping holiday seasons for the rest of my life, so (in my bah-humbug mood) I’ll acknowledge the exceptional performance & analysis. Hope your season is filled with joy, peace, & love.

Dorothy Rosenberg

Ooo I'm excited for the live version too. I watch your intros lol 😆

B3thbakes

Head slap ❤️ I love Matt in this one!!! He's so theatrical, it's a great fun one 🥰 so glad we are into some christmas and more recent ones 😊

B3thbakes

Oo I am excited for this!! Love this one! 🥰

B3thbakes

I love the arrangement, but the expressions on their faces is one of the best parts. This is one that I truly don’t think Avi could’ve done as well….just not as theatrical
