Week of Aug 21st. I managed to get two weeks done in a single week for a change. First cam "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" from Glee. I thought I'd heard all of the Glee performances, but I had missed this one. What a one to miss. It was magical to hear this song turned completely around and sung as a slow paced love song. His voice is not great quality, but the way they did the whole thing was transcendent and memorable. So glad you found that one. Never was very much into songs from the 50's, but "Mr. Blue" seems very iconic for that period. All things simple and straightforward, pleasant and calming. "Lullabye" was special as showcasing the acapella blends of The King's Singers. Very traditional, but I like traditional acapella as well as the best of the more modern methodology. This song really showcased using dissonant chords to raise the tension which can then get resolved so very nicely. Anything by George Michael is special to me and this one is included. I particularly thought the video story was very inventive. Also, I forgot how very young he was at this point in his career. Thank goodness we had him for as long as we did. "Ma Baker" was interesting, but not really my cup of tea. The overall feel of the song was fine, but it just didn't move me. "As the World Caves In" was one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful performances that I had never heard of. It really got to me and her voice is amazing. And the abrupt and not expected sudden ending was the perfect way to end this hauntingly sad song. Loved it!

I'm finally getting back to your playlist. This is for all the way back to August 14th. Cough, Cough threw me for a loop. I don't usually like this kind of music and then I realized the performance didn't fit any kind of music, but seemed like a blend of many kinds. The more I listened, the more I liked it. Not a world beater, but a horizon expander for sure. "Strange or Be Forgotten" was a pleasant diversion. The Zelenka Adagio I quite liked. It shows clearly how much further music developed by the time Bach came around, but I truly enjoyed the use of so many different instruments in this piece. I detected at least a violin, a trumpet, a clavichord(?), a recorder (?), a lower range instrument somewhat like a baritone or a French Horn and this combination seemed quite unusual to me for the time frame. Perhaps I just haven't listened to enough music from this far back. I love almost anything from Crowded House and this iconic song is certainly no exception. I had to listen to it more than once while it was available for me. "There She Goes" felt very familiar and yet I could not say I know that I heard it before, but I can say that I loved it. Sounded so much like that era. Simple, and yet so enjoyable. And there is nothing more that needs to be said of the genius that is Roy Orbison. This song was played EVERYWHERE when it came out and yet I never tired of it. Still like listening to it. Will try to do the next week much sooner than this long gap.
