Civic Duty and Other Interruptions

Friends:

This week, I truly could not win. Right at the start, Nate H. got selected for jury duty and was gone all week.

Okay, no problem. I'll make a video on my own. But then the electrician was available this week (and this week only) and he was drilling holes in concrete literally every day. Way too much noise for any sound recording.

So, with no editor and no way to get clear sound, I surrender. No video this week.

On the up-side, we have finished fabricating all 24 acoustic panels! The process was no joke. Each panel needs 7 wooden parts, glue, staples, screws, insulation foam, and 2 kinds of cloth. It took 3 days to make and cut  the parts and another full day to assemble them and hang the first 2. A massive project just to tame the echo in my new space.

Luckily, this marks the end of the shop-improvement work. The panels will be hung and the wiring finished next week and I'll be ready to get back to the woodworking goodness.

The panels themselves are also pretty interesting. Walk up to one and talk and your voice just gets sucked in. It's amazing.

Thanks to everyone for being patient while we sort out all these technical details. We'll have a full video on the sound panels in just a little bit and LOTS of other good videos just around the corner.

See you soon!

Yeah, they just help with reverb/echo. They don't reduce noise or block its transition. I mean, they probably do a little, but it's trivial.

Rex Krueger

The foam is quite floppy. It really needs a frame, but that's a reasonable question!

Rex Krueger

And you shall have it! We're in production on that right now.

Rex Krueger

No, we're all healthy....for now.

Rex Krueger

That's totally on the list. I did put a lot of thought into organizing this shop and I changed my mind a lot before I got to this layout.

Rex Krueger

Now that they're mounted, the difference is amazing. I'm shocked.

Rex Krueger

The video is in production right now! You'll get all the details!

Rex Krueger

Crummy weeks are just part of the game...part of everyone's game, really. We all just roll with the punches.

Rex Krueger

I'm so glad to hear that! I've been frustrated by all the time it's taken away from projects. It's nice that people have enjoyed the journey.

Rex Krueger

Hell yeah!! thanks for the upcoming vid on this build Rex. Your content is always awesome keep on keeping on man!!!

Christopher Cotham

You'll be getting a complete video with all the design notes you could want. They're very simple.

Rex Krueger

I use what's around me!

Rex Krueger

I cannot imagine doing a job like this with hand tools. Table-saw all the way.

Rex Krueger

You'll have a complete video on the panels! I'm making it now.

Rex Krueger

Just watching the video will give you all the design you could want. To be clear, these panels don't cut down on noise, just sound reflections.

Rex Krueger

I'm doing a complete video! You'll get all the details. When I mentioned the noise from the electrician, I was explaining why I can't do voice-over right now. It's too noisy in my shop.

Rex Krueger

I've never been accused of being lazy, it's true.

Rex Krueger

I'm in the middle of making the video now. I promise lots of interesting details.

Rex Krueger

You're very kind to be patient with me!

Sound panels are for reducing echoes. Preventing Sound transmission is whole different game. Jeff from Home Renovisions has a series on preventing sound transmission. https://youtu.be/D2TaWG4aeEU

Are the acoustic panels more effective at reducing certain frequencies? Follow-on question: would they be appropriate to put in my wife's craft room to keep her voice inside? I'm glad you are making progress with your shop.

Bob Templeton

Did you need the framing for your foam panels? Couldn't you have gotten away with just tacking fabric to the foam with some spray adhesive and then screw them into the walls with some spacers? Or was it just a case of "Woodworkers Gonna Wood"?

STFU FFS (Martín)

You know i, for one, would be very interested in a video on making acoustic panels. 🙂

Benjamin Fouty

Thanks for the update! Glad it’s not because anyone is sick and feeling crummy

George Page

I need a hanging rack for my old rusted treasures once I clean them up. Maybe an organized shop video?

Josh G

Where I used to work we installed similar panels in a space that had all cinder block walls. It was amazing how much the panels improved the sound and decreased echo. Well worth the effort.

Robert A Carbo

Nice work on the panels Rex. I'm with the rest of the crew, I'd like to see the making and distribution of the panels and how you determined what you needed. Photos and video with voice over would be great. Hey, don't worry, Murphy will get tired eventually. All you have to do is laugh at him every time he pops up. Take care, stay well and when you're ready hit us up with a video.

Matt Evans-Koch

Love that things are coming together. Sorry for the crummy week.

Mark Evans

Rex, I have enjoyed the evolution of your new shop.

Matthew Joseph Kennedy

Do you have plans for those sound panels? I could use some in my shop, especially around the Air Compressor

Jeff Griest

I do like the hammer storage rack.

Ed Manuel

Really nicely executed. Sometimes there is a place for power tools 😊

Richard C von Brecht

Got any links to the panel design? Maybe you could do a video on it? I’ve made my own with towels stretched and layered over a simple frame. And they work ok and are cheap but they’re not like professional I’ve seen.

Christopher Cotham

Do you have a design you used for the panels? Might want one next to my drill press, because my drill is rather noisy...

Wouter Engels

I would have been very interesting in the panels. Why not film it and just do a voice over?

Henrik Ubbe

We all know you are a hard worker, take your time 👍

Harald Ibener

Way to go. I’d be very interested in how those panels were built.

Ean Lake

Can't wait Rex! All in good time😊
