Early Access Video: Interviewing a Plane Maker

Friends:

Today, we have a special event. I got to interview a wooden plane-maker! Even better, it's our very own Austin Papp, whom many of you know on the forum from as Telemaestro268.

Turns out, Austin and I are neighbors and he came by the shop and explained many of the mysteries of the craft. It was a lot of fun.

On a personal note, I have a family member with a pretty serious (but not life-threatening) illness. I'm currently home in Connecticut and I'll be here for several days at least. Please accept my apologies for not returning messages and comments for a while. I've got my hands full. I'm sure many of you can relate.

Courage.

This is an utterly fantastic video. Beginning to end, your chemistry was good, Austin was a really good narrator, and the editing was spot on. Thank you both for a good video of informative and fun content.

Meryl Logue

My wife agrees that I’m hilarious.

Austin V Papp

That was really interesting. Austin is hilarious! Great video! Great chemistry.

A

That sentiment is very appreciated. I think everything is okay now.

Rex Krueger

I think we're out of the woods, but thanks for your well-wishes.

Rex Krueger

It might not be out of your league. I've seen some ROUGH ones that worked fine.

Rex Krueger

Will do! Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Thank you! I've told him several times that it's a wonderful tool ..

Rex Krueger

I appreciate that. I think everything is fine now. Fingers crossed!

Rex Krueger

The threads are great! He's also a pro photographer, so everything is clear.

Rex Krueger

I think we'll have him back another day.

Rex Krueger

Yeah, this one was mostly Austin.

Rex Krueger

I'm so glad we could brighten your day.

Rex Krueger

I laughed out loud watching this video...and I was there!

Rex Krueger

I think we'll have him back. He's a lot of fun.

Rex Krueger

That's my problem! I also already have so many that it hardly makes sense.

Rex Krueger

I have many hand-made modern planes and I'd put Austin's up against any of them. He's got a lot of skill.

Rex Krueger

We got the health stuff sorted, so I'm back at it, but thanks for your well-wishes.

Rex Krueger

I'll have him back for sure. I think he'd like to be a full-time maker.

Rex Krueger

Much thanks to Nate the editor. The clarity was largely from him.

Rex Krueger

Always family first.

Rex Krueger

Maybe we'll do a tutorial.

Rex Krueger

Thank you, Peter. You beat me to it.

Rex Krueger

You're very welocme!

Rex Krueger

He's really very funny.

Rex Krueger

Thanks, Ethan.

Rex Krueger

I had no idea what he would be like on camera, but he was GREAT!

Rex Krueger

I hope Austin will come back to the shop again. Shooting with him was a lot of fun.

Rex Krueger

Always family first. Thanks for your well wishes.

Rex Krueger

Luckily, we're out of danger, but thank you!

Rex Krueger

Thank you so much for this! Finally watched and loved it. Take care and hope everything is going as well as it can with your family. Take all the time you need, you have already given us so very much!

Carrie B

Rex, hope the family situation is moving in a positive direction. Take care.

Robert Judy

I'll never make a wooden plane (out of my league), and I may never buy one, either. But I always enjoy seeing and hearing people who are very good at something very esoteric. This is one of those videos. Thanks.

Mark Petersen

That was awesome! Take care, Rex, both of family and yourself!

Thomas Hverring

Okay, I’ve become your 126th subscriber. Looking forward to a lot of dynamic content !!!!

Richard C von Brecht

Amazing video, Rex. Please, let Austin know that he both did a great job and that his plane looks great.

Gabriel Poleze

Rex, as much as we love you, your family needs to come ahead of us. We will still be here when you return. You have my prayers.

Michael Coolidge

Neat job. Liked the insights. Definitely need to be ready up on Austin's threads.

Bradley Barth

I do have one! See if you can find it. ;)

Austin V Papp

I've loved seeing Austin's plane build threads on the forum, so it's great to see him with you in your shop Rex!

Robert

Entertaining and educational, what else could you ask for. Another great video Rex. Oh and Austin 😀

Shane Thomas

Take care of family, Rex. Thanks to you and Austin for sharing your time with us. It’s always a pleasure to be entertained while learning. I’m looking forward to the day that happens :-) All kidding aside, it’s been one of those days/weeks and this was truly appreciated. Thanks again.

Mike Schienle

I’d subscribe to Austin’s YouTube channel if he had one. He’s funny and knowledgeable. Rex, even though he’s your new BFF, you better watch out he’d give you a run for your money. Regardless, all the best with your family

Richard C von Brecht

Brilliant video. Lost count of how many times I laughed out loud.

Colby Allred

What a great video. Austin has great presence. I certainly would like to see more of his work. Take care of your family Rex and we'll be here when you return.

Matt Evans-Koch

Thanks for this video. I've made two wooden planes in the past, including the irons from oil-quench steel. It's a lot of work. I love the idea of wooden planes, but don't want to make 4 more to get good at making them :-)

Chris Rouffer

Thanks, Rex, for sharing the talents and comedic presence of your friend Austin. After seeing this video, I will remember him if I ever feel inclined to purchase a wooden plane.

Curtis Lee Zeitelhack

Love this! absolutely great video! Rex, as others have said, family is always first, do what you need to do.

Matt Cottrill

Sorry to hear about your family issues. Loved this episode and dare I suggest that you occasionally have Austin back on if he is willing? May likely mark a career shift for him into full time plane maker.

Jon Linna

Excellent video. I like how clear this was presented.

Family First

Branko Resanowitch

Great stuff brothers! Once I knock down my job list I’ll build my first one.

Michael Gross

How do I get to the forum Rex mentioned?

John Pankow

This was excellent, Rex! Thank you!!

Sean O'Neill

Yes, as others wrote, Family First! Great Video and Austin is a great resource and maker.

Marc Barash

Fantastic!

Ethan Chitty

Great video. I think Austin did a wonderful job and was a strong presenter that made things very interesting.

Michael Falbo

1. Family first. 2. Austin has a great screen presence. Even though I'm not a 'plane guy', I would enjoy seeing him on a return visit. 3. I guess I'm not a wuss (sp?) either, because I don't retract my plane irons. Neither do I like storing my planes resting on that carefully honed edge. My plane storage shelf has a 1/2" rail that the heel sits on, keeping the sole and blade off the shelf. 4. Maybe I am becoming a plane guy (see #2), because I'm about to dip my toe into plane making waters. Ordered a router plane kit from Paul Sellers at a very reasonable price.

Brian Taylor

Family first my friend. Take care.

Greg Preston

Take care of yourself and if you can your family member.
