Early Access Video: 500 Pounds of Oak

Friends:

Just last week, I had a MASSIVE oak log delivered to my shop on the coldest, iciest day of the winder. Getting it out of the truck and into the shop was an adventure and I was lucky enough to capture it all on video!

Of course, I got the log for greenwood chair making and I'll be pursuing that with my friend Rob, who is featured in this video. We're hoping to bring you a series of chair-making videos as we process this log and make it into real furniture. I'm very excited.

In other news, I have COVID and the symptoms are pretty severe. I've been house-bound for a week and I don't expect to be better for several more days, at least. I'm still hoping to have a video for you next week, but I hope you'll forgive us if we have to skip a week. Unlike my last bout with the disease, I got on anti-viral medication pretty fast and it seems to be helping, but that medication also causes severe fatigue. Just typing this is a bit of an effort.

So, we'll be back at it just as soon as I'm healthy again. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this video.

Stay safe and healthy!

Early Access Video: 500 Pounds of Oak

Nice work on this video, Rex. I really enjoyed the larger cast of the video: the building super here seems one heckuva great guy. That makes any space sooo much better.

John Laudun

At this point in my life, it's not problems with my back on the day, it's the days that follow!

John Laudun

It took about two and a half hours to split the log into nine pieces. So it was way faster than I thought. Loading a few of the pieces into my car proved to be the problem for my back, but I’ll survive. Now I need to figure out the next steps.

Bruce McDonald

I’ve found a log, I think it is silver maple. It’s about 48 inches long and 26 inch diameter, on both ends. It appears to be straight, and I don’t see any branches or knots. Now the problem…. I need to split this one, probably into eighths. I have 2 metal wedges, sledge hammer, hatchet, a couple of wooden wedges and a 6 foot long pry bar. Can anyone give me an estimate how long it’s going to take to get it into 8ths? I can’t move it as is, and it’s ata construction site. I’ve got the ok to take it, just as long as I stay out of there way. Is this a few hour job or a few day job, asked the 60 year old school teacher - not a lumberjack.

Bruce McDonald

This video is showing as private and unavailable for me, I don't have an issue with any other videos so I imagine it must be a setting on the video?

Fanichio

Sorry to hear about the illness. Just got over it myself, I feel for ya. Best wishes for a quick recovery

Green wood projects!!! so exciting

danno

I meant good in terms of no slow motion shots of somebody writhing on the ground with a limb turned in a awkward direction!

Sean McGown

I'm really glad you're enjoying that project. I still use mine all the time!

Rex Krueger

I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. It seems like a quick one, but we edited it 3 times to get a good final cut.

Rex Krueger

I'm glad you're excited. I am, too!

Rex Krueger

I did Furniture Forensics on the chair about 2 years ago. It was pretty interesting. I just keep it in the shop in case I need to lay down for a minute.

Rex Krueger

I guess the good news is that we don't need "lumber" in board form. We can split it, which is easier.

Rex Krueger

I'm trying. I really suck at sitting still.

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

It's good advice, but I've watched all the Netflix one man can watch!

Rex Krueger

Don't worry. I won't push anything. I did a few things yesterday, but today I'm very tired.

Rex Krueger

Thanks so much for your patience!

Rex Krueger

It's funny. Silver maple trees are such a pain. I have a huge one in my front yard that's going to cost us thousands to remove. But the wood is lovely. I never get tired of soft maple.

Rex Krueger

We're going to try very hard to make great chairs. We'll see how that goes.

Rex Krueger

I really appreciate that! Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Well, our "office" is a woodshop, so I guess I'm safe from that, but I'll be careful anyway.

Rex Krueger

My brother got original covid just when the pandemic started. Over 3 years later and his sense of smell still has not returned.

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

Believe it or not, that was a thing. Many chair makers made miniatures, either for children or even for toys. A friend of mine has one in his office. It's a real greenwood chair, just...tiny.

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

If you're not sure, I think the English Joiner's Bench is still my favorite. Still easy and solid.

Rex Krueger

Thank you!

Rex Krueger

I suppose the log could have killed me too. Just more quickly!

Rex Krueger

So far, recovery is steady but slow....just like last time.

Rex Krueger

That's a very kind attitude. Thank you1

Rex Krueger

I'm glad you liked the video. We're trying hard to make things fun without sensationalizing.

Rex Krueger

I guess we all get sick now and then.

Rex Krueger

Everyone says that. I guess it's time for me to listen.

Rex Krueger

That really sums up my feelings, too. Chair making is exciting, covid is not.

Rex Krueger

I agree with those priorities!

Rex Krueger

That's very kind of you to say. I'm getting better....slowly.

Rex Krueger

Thank you! I appreciate that!

Rex Krueger

Get better. Then tackle the log. Looking forward to it. I’m about half way through making you shave horse. I only get a few hours a week to do it. But I’m excited.

Bruce McDonald

Hope you recover quickly and take care of yourself! Thank you for posting. The video is awesome and I am excited for you! Please do take your time in recovering and give yourself grace. ❤️‍🩹

Carrie B

Take good care of yourself. I never had COVID. I hope your recovery is swift, and I look forward to learning about making chairs!

Miranda DeRaymond

I hope you feel better soon. I've been having recurring bouts of mild Long COVID for a couple of years now, so I know how you feel. COVID fatigue sucks. Stay safe, get well, and don't overexert yourself. BTW, I just had a chance to watch the video. When you said, "We're going to make a chair like this" all I could see was the chaise. You had me going "WTF!" But seriously, is the chaise a future project? Furniture Forensics?

Michael Bennett

Welcome to the world of log processing! Figuring out how to get things from log form into lumber form has been one of my main investigations of the last few years. 🪵🤔 Sorry to hear about the Covid. Rest up, and we'll catch you after you've recovered. Looking forward to seeing what sorts of things you create with that beast!

Patrick Salsbury

Hope you recover quickly, but please take it easy and give your body as much rest as it needs!

Josh Anderson

Get some rest. Hope you Get Well Soon!

iKoffeeAddict

I hope you feel better soon, Rex! Please don't push yourself, physical exertion while you are recovering may increase the chances of developing long-term chronic fatigue, and no one wants that for you. Take it easy and be super lazy until you are feeling 110%! 🙂

Jac

That is a nice chunk of wood Rex. Looking forward to seeing you split it down and make the chair(s). Until then, take good care of yourself, get well and don't push your recovery. Give is the time it needs. See when you are better.

Matt Evans-Koch

Beautiful log there Rex! I like where you're going with this! But take the time you need to recover, we'll understand!

Robert

This is very cool. I kept a 9' section of a silver maple that needed to come down in front of the house. Ended up with 23 boards out of it, various thicknesses. I had fun rolling that baby around before it went to the mill. Yikes. Best to everyone. Hope you feel better, Rex.

TeddyB!!

Hey Rex, stay safe, get well and make fantastic chairs with that log

Wayne

Hope you feel better soon, Rex!

Jennessa Lynam

Get well soon! But don't come back too soon as no one likes the snotty sod powering through at the office and infecting everyone else.

Ian Hampson

I build a Nickleson and that is a fantastic bench

Carlos Alvarado

Wow but first I hope you get better soon I got Covid when it started and was in the hospital for a week so I know how bad it can be. I cannot wait to see you process the Hugh log it will be interesting to learn how to do that.

Carlos Alvarado

Feel better, Rex!

LiraNuna

I can wait to see you process this Red Oak log. I got a much smaller one from my front yard. I need to make it into something. Maybe I can parallel your videos and make a doll chair?

Richard C von Brecht

Hope you feel better soon!

Geoffrey Wilson

Shake it off and get back to work, ya slacker! Seriously though, take all the time you need to recover. Your health is most important. We'll be here when you get back. In the meantime, I'll re-watch all the bench videos and try and decide which one to build!

Mike

Here's to a swift recovery

Joseph Vaughan

Unlike 500 pound logs, Covid is nothing to fool with...take good care of yourself!

John Griswold

Take care of your self, otherwise we don't get any videos :^) Hope you get over it soon and don't have any annoying aftereffects!

Thomas Hverring

Take care of your health, the videos can wait.

Andrew More

Get better, Rex. Fun video of the log unloading. The fact that you got only one slow motion emphasis shot is actually a good thing.

Sean McGown

Neat on the log and plans. Total bummer on getting sick.

Bradley Barth

Vitamin D, bro. Get well.

STFU FFS (Martín)

Excited about the chairs. Not so much about the Covid. Be well my friend. See you when you get back.

Greg Preston

Get enough rest! Health first, then family, maybe then content for us!

Gwynfor

Rex! What a bummer about the Covid. Take your meds, get plenty of rest, and heal, brother. This log video was a lot of fun to watch. It will be great to see your process and builds, but I am sure we can all wait while you recover.

John Shufelt

Jeez, no bueno. Feel better soon!

Graham Dumas

I hope you have a swift and complete recovery. Don't push yourself to get another video out next week, concentrate on recovery.
