Build Along Part 8

Friends:

Welcome to Part 8 of the Shaker Table series. Today, we're ripping out the leg stock. It sounds simple, but it can be time-consuming and I've got several tips that I haven't shown in previous videos.

Don't forget to check out the forum thread and show YOUR build. It's fun, I swear.

Build Along Part 8

Comments

Was rather tickled to hear you say what you did about mistake recovery. I started woodworking four years ago, and I one of the biggest hurdles I had to overcome was getting comfortable making at least one horrible mistake every project. Had to reframe these in my mind as learning opportunities. And because the stuff I build rarely turns out exactly the way I envisioned, I now brand everything as a "prototype".

A couple of scientists took the idea even further... transparent wood. https://knowablemagazine.org/content/article/technology/2023/why-scientists-are-making-transparent-wood

What are your plans for finishing? If you're going to paint it (what I always do with poplar), why worry about the green wood? If not, have you ever tried bleaching? I've thought of that before staining, but I've never "pulled the trigger". It might make a real difference on narrow pieces, like legs and aprons. I thought I'd see what the interwebs had to say about this, and I found these pictures. https://www.jennasuedesign.com/how-to-bleach-wood/#Bleached_Poplar

Only ONE big mistake?! I wish!

Kenneth Carlile

My experience has been every project has at least one big mistake and every big mistake has at least one project in it. Thank you for keeping it real, Rex. Have a great evening.

Matt Evans-Koch

Eh, you would have planed them anyway. I like seeing you make the same mistake I would have!

Gerald Eddy

Nice collection of mistakes. You said you had more to share.

Richard C von Brecht

Nice video. Goes to show you are human and ways to work through the mistakes.
