Build this Mallet in an Afternoon

Friends:

It’s New Tool Day here at Compass Rose. After years of development, we’re finally able to release our Advanced Joiner’s Mallet Kit.

Many of you will remember this video, where I first showed off the mallet I bought at a Cleveland street fair in 2019. That mallet had balance and ergonomics that were much better than any other mallet I’ve tried (and I’ve tried a few). We showed people how to build that mallet and even made a set of plans, but many people still couldn’t make it because they couldn’t source the wood or chop the big, tapered mortise.

Today, we’re solving that problem with a kit that has everything. You get a head that’s made in two pieces of red oak. The two halves are joined with a complex finger joint that gives an excellent mechanical connection, even before you add glue. You also get a handle blank made from white oak and a piece of dark hardwood (mostly walnut) to make a contrasting wedge for the handle. Because of the head’s two-piece design, the mortise is already cut and it perfectly matches the taper of the handle. Everything fits together right out of the package. You glue up the head, shape the handle, and put it all together. It’s an approachable but satisfying project that takes just an afternoon.

The kit is right here.

Of course, Patrons get Patron perks. You’re getting early access. No one else can even see the product. (So please use the links in this post. The mallet is invisible at the Compass Rose website.) You also get a discount—the lowest price anyone is going to pay. Finally, we’re including a FREE tool with the first 150 mallet kits sold. I’m hoping that all of those free tools will go to Patrons. If they sell out, my regular audience won’t even know, and Patrons will get all of them.

Our warehouse is having a little trouble getting these ready to ship, so there might only be 150 kits available when this post goes up. The remaining kits will be stocked on Monday and I’ll post an update here. We’ll keep the discount price for several days, so everyone will have a chance to get the lowest price.

The video also mentions our free pdf guide and I’m going to attach it to this post. That guide does not have links and is not the final version. Please don’t share it.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this new tool a reality. We’ll see you soon with another woodworking video.

Happy Saturday!

Your Advanced Joiner’s Mallet Kit turned out great. If I knew how, I would send a photo of the current mallet along with my rendition of this mallet from plans you published back in 2019 plus a laminated head mallet I made from plans in a magazine maybe twenty years ago. I really like the latest model. All I had in 2019 was poplar; it is not hard enough.
