PROCESS - Mister Misty

As promised, here's my process and some thoughts for Mister Misty!
I recently got figurines of Misty, Staryu, and Starmie for a great price on ebay (my impulse control is a little wonky sometimes but they're freakin' cute, okay???), which was the inspiration point for this whole piece. They're such great quality; the Pokemon having clear resin for their crystals is such a nice touch! You can see them in the final picture in this set.
I started with a really scribbly thumbnail, and initially had the model facing forward. But I turned him around in the first pass of the sketch to add a little sex appeal with the full-on boobs-and-butt pose. It's ridiculous but effective.
I went on to do a cleaner sketch to hammer out some of the details, adding a better sense of motion, some sparkles, a rainbow, and changed Misty's expression from "I challenge you" to something a bit more joyful. I liked the more aggressive expression of the previous one, but I wanted to ultimately keep this piece light and fluffy. For the curious, Starmie is using Splash, and Staryu is using Bubble Beam.
After inking, I went a little on auto-pilot filling in the colors, but it was feeling dark and sad and bland, so I changed it up a bit to look a little more inspired by Red/Blue's watercolor artwork. Not as textured, certainly, but the approach to lighting is similar. I think it's really cute! I was pretty dead-set on keeping Misty's bathing suit/jacket combo dark blue like the original Misty design, but to keep everything feeling bright, I changed it up to something lighter at the 11th hour. Feels better that way.
