VSG Game Update #1

For the first official update, let's summarize what's happened up until now...

Villain Survival Guide was originally intended to be a small game to get some good game dev practice, but it turned out to be a pretty cool idea that people were interested in, and also more of an undertaking than I thought anyway, so I'm no longer calling it a "small" game. However, as it is right now it is still pretty dang small!

Shown above: My first mock-up for the game. A fair amount has changed since then. The perspective has always been a challenge in this game, but I think it's too late to change it now. o__o;;

Shown above: Updated perspective, palette, and some new areas of Captain Badguy's house.

Shown above: My first exploration into cut scenes and mini-games. I felt pretty good to figure out my own game mechanic on my own, even if it's simple and a little weird. This has been polished slightly since then.

Shown above: Some UI elements. These will be in the demo but for testing are not currently implemented fully yet. Also, the closet took a while to animate, but I'm glad I put that much effort in, it looks pretty cool I think!

Now, if you watch today's video you'll see that there is a lot of polishing to do and also there's no audio yet. The main progress lately has been by Scott in coding the mini-games there are assets for.

The closet mini-game is a questionnaire that decides on your outfit. It was a lot harder to program than I thought (especially those radio buttons?) and that's where Scott came in and decided to take over for me. A true hero! Of course, handing over build control also means the focus is the function and visuals will need more tweaking later.

After that he got started on the next mini-game, where Captain Badguy imagines himself turning guards into cats with his KittenRay™ to make himself get really good at evil laughter. It's a bit of a stretch for a concept, but we're a couple of weirdos over here and this is what we come up with. Anyways, the AI is a work in progress still so we turned it off for the purpose of this update. Those poor guards didn't stand a chance...

As you may have noticed, there are still a lot of kinks to work out, improvements to make, placeholder text to replace, scaling issues, etc. As we add more to the game, more problems surface, but eventually we will have it working and looking right!

My next priority for game assets will be another mini-game screen with some higher res artwork, and then another cool room for CB's house. We figure that once the house is complete with some good content, it will be ready for an early demo release, which you guys will be the first to have access to! But we still have a lot of work to do, so wish us luck!

Thanks for reading, I hope it was interesting! I appreciate any advice and feedback, and if you have any questions, please ask any time!
