An eerie and intricate puzzle, formed of fractaline components that seem to shift with insidious intent. You can use this item as a spellcasting focus. When you roll damage for a spell you cast using this item, you can use your reaction to reroll any 1s rolled on the damage dice. You must use the new results, even if 1s are rolled.
Grievous Blessing. This property uses a Pain die, which starts as a d4. Each time you use this property, the size of the Pain die increases by 1 size (d4 > d6 > d8 > d10 > d12) until you finish a long rest, which resets the size of the Pain die to a d4. After rolling a d12 Pain die, you cannot use this feature again until you finish a long rest.
When a creature you can see within 90 feet of you misses with an attack, you can use your reaction to roll the Pain die and add the result to the attack roll, potentially turning the miss into a hit. If the attack hits, you can also add the number rolled to the attack’s damage.
Curse: Herald of Pain. When you roll a d12 as part of the Grievous Blessing feature, the curse of this item extends to you. As long as you remain cursed, you are unwilling to part with this item.
Whenever you roll a Pain die as part of the Grievous Blessing feature, the DM rolls a d100. If the result of the d100 is lower than the roll on the Pain die, a Chain Devil appears in an unoccupied space within 30 feet of you. The DM decides the creature's attitude (Hostile/Indifferent/Friendly) and actions.
New initiates of the painful path often lack the means to share the gift with others. Those more versed in deliverance of agony must guide them, directing their hands in surgical application to maximize suffering. Outsiders who seek to exploit this generosity for their own ends are met with consequences fitting their blasphemous indiscretions; not all are meant to walk the path.
