Q&A

Hey Patrons!

I’m overdue for a Q&A and was thinking about doing another. Ask your questions in this thread! Be quick because I plan to record in the next day or two. Sorry for the short notice but I just realized if I’m going to fit it in my production schedule I need to do it now.

UPDATE: Wow! You folks heeded the call. So many questions so fast! Let’s cap it here so I have some hope of getting through them all 😄 I’ll also try to answer them here if I don’t cover them in the video.

Quinn, I need the password for your files link. Won't let me in.

On that note look at zeaman.com it’s AMAZING !!

Oh Please look at producing an orrery, I was looking at making a 3D print of one but much rather spend the effort making one from metal.

Alan

I followed your advice on the mill vice and have now also added a nice new mill! I know you've recommended complete endmill sets, etc in your tooling list, but for starters what would be a good first few cutters? A roughing end mill, shell mill, insert facing mill, a couple of HSS End mills, slot mill, fly cutter? I appreciate this is work dependent to some extent, but first few bits as a baseline kit?

Okay everyone- I think I have answered all the questions here that didn’t get answered in the video, and the video should answer the rest if you don’t see your answer here. Thanks for the great questions!

I am! I’d like to build an orrery, so a whole lot of gears

I have! The biggest was my first vertical boiler. I scrapped the whole thing. When you know you know. 😄 Check out that playlist for details

Thanks for all the great videos as well, and looking forward to learning more in the future :)

Have you ever had to scrap a part (or project) after pouring tons of work into it? If so how did you know it was time to throw in the towel? And (from personal experience of mine) how do you stop yourself from “biting off more than you can chew” on a project? Like how do you judge if you will or won’t be able to do a project?

Just starting to learn the lathe from your instructional video series. Thank you!! Looking to purchase a PM lathe. Have a large working area. Which would you recommend as a "starter?" Thanks again for being here!

Luckily, I have no relevant questions, just enjoy the ride. Looking forward to the locomotives work.

I asked this last year, :-), but I was curious as to whether you're thinking about doing any projects involving gear cutting?
