CoS January Devlog - Fire in the Hole!
Added 2024-02-01 04:29:44 +0000 UTCHello Patrons! This month we have a very *hot* and *steamy* fun video to show you! This month, we're taking an in-depth look at how coal firing works in Century of Steam, featuring the wonderful Baldwin 8-20D 2-6-0 Mogul! Coal firing's never been done right before, and we're very proud of this... it also shows steam generation, firing, and running, all tied together on our WIP Ponderosa Map!

In an answer to someone other's question you explained why AI drivers are not an option for CoS as per now. The reasoning is perfectly understandable. At this point it would nearly be the same as developing an AI driver for the real world. But to cover use cases as the one specified by the questioner; what about a sort of AI light? I'm thinking along the lines of having physics etc. inactive for the train in question and just have it run at constant 15 mph till it encounters a stop signal, fusee, switch ligned against it, end of track or another vehicle. At such a low speed and ignoring physics you'd probably circumvent all edge cases without too blatantly unrealistic effects (yeah, okay, people could use it to cheat themselves up a way too steep grade, but then that's their problem).

While I'll probably not use this detailed model in day to day operations, it definitely does spark more than just a bit of interest and a desire to learn firing properly. This really looks well thought through and educational.
