Treasure Chest (Key Lock)
Added 2023-10-13 20:05:00 +0000 UTC
Print in place treasure chest that doesn't require any support material or assembly! Fully functional right off the build plate!
Locking mechanism allows the lid to lock shut and can only be opened with the 3D printed key!
Printed at 0.2mm layer height
*Update 10/16* I designed a V2 version of the locking mechanism which will increase the durability of the lock. The amount of free space in the lock housing was decreased on each size so that the two latches can't over extend and will only open enough to lock/unlock the chest. I also added a solid block in-between the two latches so that they can't over extend towards the center on accident. The V2 model has replaced the V1 in this listing and is called "TreasureChest(KeyLock)(V2).stl"
Thanks for the details, I'll give those options a try!

I've printed over 15+ so far on X1C and P1S and have not experienced this issue. There can be many different causes for this issue, but if the left locking mechanism fell off without twisting the key, this would lead me to believe there's an extrusion issue where the filament isn't melting as much as it needs to which would result in a weak bond. And in this case it's resulting in no bond at all. I would increase walls by +1 and increase nozzle temp by +5 or +10 and see if that solves the issue. I printed all of my chests with PLA filament at 230 nozzle temp haven't had any locks break, even when bending them all the way left & right with my hands for durability testing.

I'm having the same issue as Ed. Just printed one of these and as I turned it upside down the left locking mechanisim just fell off, I hadn't even tried a key yet. Suggestions? Using a bambu carbon x1.

If the lock mechanism is detaching during the print that would lead me to believe the printer being used is either experiencing under extrusion or the nozzle is too close to the build plate. Under extrusion would cause the filament to not melt as much as it needs to for proper bonding of the lock mechanism to the base of the chest. The nozzle being too close to the build plate could cause the nozzle to slightly clip into the sides while traveling which would result in breaking them off from the base.

Couldn't get this to print without the lock mechanism detaching and failing every time. 😥😥

They’re not designed to be scaled any smaller/larger. There’s no guarantee they will function properly if scaled to a different size

Not designed to be scaled smaller

They’re meant to be printed at 100% scale. Scaling any smaller will result is less durable hinges & locking mechanism with no guarantees it will function properly.

I printed several scaled down to 70%, the locking mechanism breaks easily. Any chance at getting that strengthened?

Until what point can I safely scale this down and it will still work?

Can this be scaled up? Would love to make one a bit bigger.

Been subbed to you on YouTube and would always watch your shorts. After seeing this I went ahead and just got a membership here, this will be neat to keep my mini 3d printed items in.
