As Mihai said, Johan is heavily implied to be alive in the spinoff novel.
Great ending to an incredible series; its really grown on me over time and I think its actually extremely fitting. There is a youtube video called "Explaining the ending of Monster" that wraps all the concluding thoughts up in a bow pretty nicely, I would definitely recommend checking it out if you have the time. Aleczandxr also has some great video essays on the series if you're ever interested in more Monster content.
Really glad you enjoyed the story, sad that its over but cant wait for the next journey, thanks so much for the great content and nuanced reflections.

Such an amazing ending. I truly believed that Johan will end up dying since that's what he wanted. I find it funny that Johan said 'The only thing everybody is equal in is death' but still survives 2 gunshots in the head. The title of this episode also is amazing, the real monster. Who was the real monster ? Johan or maybe the people who were doing the expriments or the mother who chose to give one of her twins ?

The first time I watched this episode I thought Johan jumped out the window to kill himself but after that I heard that the author released a novel "another Monster" which gave clues to Johan still being alive.
