The pacing and revelations in this first cour seem kind of fast because this portion of the story is actually a compressed and modified version of roughly the first half of the 2003 series, the main part the two series have in common. So actually these first 13-14ish episodes comprise about a third of the story of the manga, just sped up a bit for people who already saw the original show. On the positive flipside, you could say this is almost like a prologue and the real show starts from here. Not that the first cour is bad by any means, it just sets a lot of plot threads up quickly that get expanded on throughout the rest of the anime. Looking forward to the rest as always!
