Showing Xerxes was really effective way to rise the stakes without really changing anything - it's not just some villain with a crazy plan, they've done it before. Love how everything is connected to human ambition in the end though, the dwarf in the flask was manipulative sure, but the king still went along with mass murder for a chance at immortality.
