It is actually left unclear what was going on with alchemy before Father and Van, also they "introduced" alchemy to the east and west so maybe alchemy was discovered in Xerxes and was not yet discovered in the west and east. It was probably left unclear so we can speculate like this, just like real world history where the origin of many things is unclear.
