I think you’re missing that his mother and grandparents were neglectful. While they didn’t HARM Tenko physically, they harmed him emotionally by letting his dad abuse him and by telling him to “not cry”. They never encouraged his dreams. Also..Tenko’s father wasn’t just overbearing. He was physically and mentally abusive. Let’s also remember that AFO drilled into his mind that Tenko loved killing his family in his mind. In actuality, he was probably terrified and sad. We can’t completely trust his memory.

2023-11-04 21:38:25 +0000 UTCI sincerely wonder if it's possible to redeem Shigaraki. He seems quite committed to his goal of destroying everything. Personally, I think his reasoning for why is kind of lose, sure his dad was a bit of an overbearing jerk - especially from Shigaraki's perspective and disregarding his Father's relationship or lack of one with his own mother Shimura, but other than that his upbringing could have been way worse. He had a loving mother, caring sister, and his grandparents also seemed kind. To go from wanting to be a hero to joyful murder of his family and later on the world, seems quite extreme and unlikely to be changed. I suppose it's possible that his memory isn't complete yet, something or multiple things that would add further context to the situation of his childhood that would bring him to a revelation that drastically changes his perspective on things. I'm still holding out for the possibility that I mentioned earlier that Eri will play a big role in defeating Shigaraki with her ability to reverse the time of things she touches, and that something special might happen if she comes into contact with one of the hands Shigaraki keeps of his family members. Though at the same time it's hard to imagine Eri being brought anywhere close to the battlefield to actually combat someone like Shigaraki in any way, even if it's just to reverse his decay.
