Xena Warrior Princess 5x10 Reaction

One of the funnest things watching this is your facial expressions; 1/2 "omg, what the fuck is this" 1/4 "it's Xena, I love Xena" and a a 1/4 "morbidly curious"

Funny how Joxer asked about that and Gabrielle told him when he was there. It’s like the writers forgot about it.

Girl4Music

That's possible. As for Draco, I don't think it really matters what he does or doesn't understand; he's still stuck under the effect of one of Cupid's arrows (fired by Bliss.)

They didn’t need to explicitly say anything. They never needed to in fact. They always knew how to imply it without either contriving it or erasing it. It’s a far cry from other TV shows where the lead characters were also arguably the queer ones or at least the ones where it would make the most sense to have a love story between the same-sex leads. Like.. OUAT, Supergirl, Supernatural, Rizzoli And Isles. All notoriously known for queerbaiting. The one thing Xena never did was queerbait. In fact you could say they did the opposite and straightbaited instead. And there was nowhere near the same network or societal limitations and restrictions for the aforementioned. Xena did even though they couldn’t. The others could but never did. Massive fucking difference. I will always love and respect the Xena creators/cast/crew for providing both female and WLW/queer representation even though it could have cost them their careers. I’ll always defend them because they accepted and embraced and catered to us queer people on a major longterm scale before anyone else did. In fact I dare say that if they didn’t, we’d still be nowhere near as far as we are today. Xena was the blueprint and greenlight and it should be praised. What they did with this TV show as far as female and WLW/queer representation goes was nothing short of absolutely remarkable. It validated both powerful independent women and gay/queer people instead of insulted and ridiculed them. Making our stories the MAIN ones for really the first time. And debatably still the only time… And this episode alone proves that. So even if it’s just another jukebox musical episode… there’s still so much substance and value in it for us.

I think everybody does. But it’s just nice to see the cast and crew have fun. They deserve it. For many - this was their going out episode. So it’s a celebration.

Girl4Music

That’s it! It’s in stark contrast to the environment of most TV show sets these days. Where it’s just constantly busy busy busy work all the time. No time for play. Xena was a family environment. Quite literally since the main actress married the main executive producer and was about to have his baby at this point in the show.

This episode was more for the cast and crew than it was for the audience. They just wanted and needed a celebration episode since it would be the last time so many of them would see each other through working together on Xena. That’s what I always keep in mind when watching it. It’s for THEIR enjoyment, not mine. And that is so lost in today’s day and age of TV show making. Showing the cast and crew just having fun. Pity Kassidy stopped the episode before she could see a heavily pregnant Lucy Lawless in Gabrielle’s revealing go-go dancing outfit just being a goof.

Xena uses that same hand sign to indicate Gabrielle’s sexuality in ‘A Comedy Of Eros’ but what he believes is love is making him disregard that because he doesn’t understand unconditional love. Something Gabrielle understands inherently.

Well, there's your hundredth episode. As you noted, they had a rematch from the first episode with Xena vs. Draco. ... You are correct that Joxer has another identical brother, Jett, who showed up in the third season episode "King of Assassins." In that installments, Jett and Joxer spoke briefly of their other brothers, Jace, and Jett indicated his sexuality with a Fred Sanford-esque hand sign. So, there was some anticipation of the debut of Jace. ... This isn't really the same thing as "The Bitter Suite," as it's comprised of pop songs and has no explanation for all the spontaneous singing and dancing. And I don't think it's as good, despite really liking the tunes, especially Draco's heavy metal heroics. (I have a hard time with the battle rap.) And the Jace version of "Dancing In The Moonlight." Still comes into my noggin 25 years later.

I don't think it's usually a favorite for people, but this will probably always be on a top 10 for me. (I dunno, there are so many good ones). Not only did we need something fun and lightheaded after the last episode, I think it captures a lot of very human themes that will always be relevant. I also does it better than a lot of things I've seen. Also, I don't know if Ngila Dickson was still doing costumes at this point, but I think they're all super fun! Between Draco's backup, Jace and his backup, I legitimately felt like I was heading out to our gay bar here in town on a busy night. 🤣 It was great!

Thank you. I could not have put that into words well enough and I wholeheartedly agree. This episode has so many good themes that are important to me, as a queer guy, who was raised by his single mom, a fantastic woman. They didn't even explicitly say anything, at any point, but this show hits so many chords in my heart.

If you watch the credit’s you’ll see Lucy pop out in the bikini Gabrielle was wearing in the episode! While not the best, it just showcases the fun of the show and I love when we get to see them have fun on set

Alfredo

I definitely preferred the 1st musical to this one, but still fun nonetheless.

Watching ‘Lyre, Lyre, Hearts On Fire’. There’s a scene between Gabrielle and Joxer where Gabrielle asks him why he was so mean to his brother, Jace, who is identical to him but queer. He has just had a conversation with his brother where he made fun of his unconventional appearance and lifestyle and Gabrielle calls him out on it. Knowing how he feels. I really wanted Gabrielle to say something to him like “Joxer, you do realize that I am also different, don’t you? That kind of different. I might not dress or behave or talk like him but I am no different to his different. So why do you treat me better than him when I am just your friend and he is your family?” But given the network censorship, I reckon that might have been a bit too on the nose for Gabrielle to say. You see, the thing is that Jace is authentic to who he is and is very comfortable and confident in how he expresses himself. Joxer never has been that secure so he has always pretended to be something he isn’t. As Xena puts it a little later when talking with Jace. All Joxer knows is who he wants to be. He doesn’t know who he is or can be. And he is the one criticizing Jace, his own brother, for being something that he is not and never will be. The episode itself is a musical and not really all that important to the story of the show. But it’s a moment of queer (I say queer rather than gay because Jace might not be gay and queer also refers to gender identity so it’s the best term to use) solidarity. Of providing queer representation even through network censorship. They’re providing queer representation without specifically using the term “queer” to refer to it as because they can’t or aren’t allowed to use that term or any other queer terms of reference. But you know exactly what they’re implying and you know that they’re not saying that it is wrong. This is what I mean about how Xena provides queer or specifically WLW representation through censorship. They use the censorship restrictions to dig deeper into their queer narratives. To find a stronger or even more realistic way of addressing and exploring them because they wanted to talk about sexuality and gender identity sincerely without making it seem inorganic and without alerting the censors. And they show that it is absolutely possible to do both well. So don’t give me the excuse that it can’t be done. It is all about the creators/cast/crew’s intention. And if the intention is sincere, then regardless whether it’s censored or not, you will still get true representation. You just have to ask yourself these questions: Do they intend to provide representation? Do they intend it for the right reasons? If the answer is yes to both, the censorship doesn’t matter. It can be used as a vehicle to write better queer stories but only if the intention is to do that. There is no such thing as “better representation” It’s not the representation that needs to be better. It’s the creation and specifically intention of creation. *speaking directly to art/entertainment creators* Because if Xena can provide this level of quality in representation even while under strict censorship… Then there is no fucking excuse that you can’t even when it’s not. The question is - do you intend to?
