October 29-31

Ok, so I was really dissatisfied with my final broccoli drawing. I mean, it was fine as its own drawing! But it wasn’t how I wanted the series to conclude.

Believe it or not, I actually started all of the sketches on this page at basically the same size as the Oct. 28th drawing on the far left, but then- like plants- they just grew. The final Oct 31 drawing didn’t even fully fit on the page! Which is how I realized that I really wanted a full size illustration that didn’t have any of its leaves obstructed so you could really compare the final version to the very first one and see how much my little broccoli had transformed.
FLASHBACK:

⬆️ The first #Broctober. (Drawn October 5, cause I didn’t get the idea to do this daily project until five days into the month)
So!
Even though emotionally I felt Very Done with #Broctober, I realized that the only way to wrap it up right would be to paint one last portrait of my little broccoli from both the first and last day together, so you could really see how much my little guy had transformed over the last month.

Keeping consistent with my inability to keep consistent, my first sketch of the Oct 5 broccoli sprout was basically in the correct size proportion to the Oct 31 drawing, but then I kept futzing with it and it bulked up way too big in comparison with its final self. Just imagine that it’s, like, one third (or half?) smaller than it is to get a more accurate idea of how much it grew 😬
Here’s the entire month of drawings:

(Oct 16 drawn twice on both of these last two spreads to show both how it was mangled from a squirrel attack and then propped up by sticks that same day to force it to grow back into the right direction. Which it did! Little tender sproutlings are so resilient 🥹)

As all long-term projects are, this was equal parts fun and challenging and frustrating and I learned a ton and I am hungry to learn how to do the things I couldn’t figure out on my own. Some of my work here causes me physical pain to look at and some of it I’m like “…Hey. That’s actually pretty alright.”
C’est la vie! C’est la broccoli 😎🥦
