Matt is an avid climber (indoor bouldering, specifically). Even though he's invested in pants specially made for the activity, he climbs so zealously that he regularly reduces them into scraps.

After some small mending jobs, his pants were getting so threadbare that just attaching new patches would actually tear the jeans material, creating new rips right along the fresh repairs. It was time for some Heavy Duty Pants Reinforcing. I cannibalized fabric from his previous pair and used some leftover IKEA iron-on hemming tape to adhere it inside the current set, just to keep the patches in place until I could sew them down.

Once each patch was secured, I encased the edges of each legit rip in tight stitches like a mummy, to keep it from unraveling further.

Now I had to fill up the entire size of the patches with additional stitches to really seal the two fabric pieces together, because lord only knows IKEA hemming tape isn't built for repairing active wear.

After my first two stabs at freehanding designs, my most aesthetically pleasing attempt was on the leg I tackled last, using a jar lid as a stencil to get perfect circles to stitch along. (The back butt had wobbly, differently-sized overlapping circles, and the right leg had a really basic, almost invisible, square grid that does not show up in pictures.)

Matt noted that, while holding still, the stitches lining the tears were a tiny bit stiff-scratchy-ish, but once he was actually moving around and on the wall he didn't notice them at all.

All in all, they pass the test and will be returned to active duty in Matt's wardrobe.
