Open Thread: Patreon Mailbag (January 2025)

Hi Patrons!

One or more of our next few After Dark episodes will likely feature listener mail. Have any questions/suggested topics? Let us know in the comments below.

Also: If we didn't get to your question last time around, you are welcome to re-post them. Thanks, as always, for your support.

Who’s had the better career post Ocean’s Eleven? Matt Damon, Brad Pitt or George Clooney.

Jeff May

Have you guys ever been forced into a big life change that made you uncomfortable and unhappy? Did it turn out okay in the end? I work at a school and was told that I have to relocate to another building in the district to assist with a student for the rest of the year. The idea of leaving what I have behind is rough. Hoping it turns out well.

I'm interested if you all have any thoughts on this new bill in Connecticut which makes movie theaters list what time trailers start and the movie truly begins

My question is about the ads. I should pause here and let you know that even though I’m a patron, old habits die hard and I’ve never once remembered to listen to a new episode of the main podcast on Patreon. Every week I come here for the bonus content and realize, oops I’ve done it again- listened on Apple podcast with those aforementioned ads. Back to my question- I understand why with Jeff’s voice and experience he does most of the ads with Devindra having a few spots sprinkled in (Pretty Litter!) but in all my years listening I’ve only ever heard Dave do one ad spot. Is this because as the host who does the intros, segues, etc- we hear him talk enough already? Is there nothing he feels good enough to endorse with his good name? Does he just not want to? Always been curious how and why that’s the case…

Samantha Quick

I am wondering if #slashtag is a thing on Bluesky? I used the hashtag to recommend Daniel Scheinert’s movie THE DEATH OF DICK LONG, an underseen A24 movie described as “dipshit Fargo”. It’s currently streaming on Hoopla and Kanopy, but definitely worth the price of a rental at least. In the episode where you reviewed The Instigators, Jeff described enjoying movies where “things spiral out of control, people try their best to be clever and circumstances make them do dumb things….and things continue to go out of control….” and it reminded me of this great movie which I think all three hosts would enjoy for different reasons.

Eric Page

Dave, you like Poker and video games, have you played Balatro?

Danny Champlin

@davechen can you grow facial hair, and if not, if you could, what kind of style would you want? I see goatee

The discussion on this week’s After Dark Episode about Jeff and his community’s kindness club, combined with the increased discussion of David Lynch and his films following his passing made me wonder if any of you have seen his film “The Straight Story”. I know Jeff especially said he’s never really connected to Lynch’s work but I think this might be one that he would enjoy given the topic of conversation and the fact that it eschews much of the stylistic aspects and unsettling content often found in Lynch’s movies in favor of a small human story. It’s an oft-forgotten entry in the Lynch canon but I have always found it to be an almost unbearably moving film that touches a lot on the topics of radical kindness and showing consideration for others in your community, family, and the world as a whole. As you all talked about, things are looking grim for the next few years, but to me all of David Lynch’s work, but especially this one has been a wonderful salve during this time.

Kyle Bainbridge

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it in the comments yet and assuming you guys will discuss the Oscars in the AD but felt worth asking—what do you guys think about the new AI vocal enhancements used for some of this years Oscar noms? So far we know The Brutalist and Emilia Perez used vocal AI but I know other noms used AI in other ways. Do you think the Academy should make AI-usage an automatic disqualification? Are some AI usages more passable than others?

WHY THE HELL IS NO ONE MENTIONING THIS? Am I late to the party? I just finished Pantheon and I am floored. This is one of the best, smartly written, thought provoking shows I have seen in a long time. Why are more people not talking about this series? I have so much more to say but I am more interested if others are as enamored as I am or am i the lone enlightened?

Gael Rene

Lately I find it hard to get into anything new and resort to “comfort food” tv. I’ll browse around and usually end up watching something old I’ve seen many times before, or just end up watching the news or political comedy shows like The Daily Show or Colbert. I think I need a new process for deciding what to watch to get me out of this rut. How do you guys break out of this? What is your guys process when deciding what to watch with your significant others? Do you plan or do research ahead of time and sit down knowing what you want to watch? Do you look up reviews or websites? Do you make or pick up suggestions from other friends or each other? Do you just go through “what’s new” on each service and browse?

Dan Childers

Oh! I do listen to the weekly plugs. I'd just completely forgotten the setup. Mostly because I paused the episode to actually go watch the film. Thank you!

JPeregrinus

Listen to the weekly plugs section of that episode for an explanation.

NR

Fellas I’d love to hear about your favourite (or least favourite) Australian films or tv shows. I know Colin from Accounts and Bluey have come up recently. Thanks and I appreciate everything you guys do.

April Reid

It is a truism that explaining jokes makes any joke 10x funnier. In the Nosferatu review, immediately after playing the trailer, Dave says; "Nah, I'm more into almonds!" Wry giggles from Devindra & Jeff ensue. Someone please explain this joke? Doesn't even have to be on the pod, just reply to this comment. Thank you

JPeregrinus

What is the best show or movie each of you have recommended to the other?

David Esposito

I'm curious on this too!

Sergio Meyer

Baba ganoush cuz

April Reid

I’m glad you’re in remission and wishing you good health into the future

April Reid

+1 to this recommendation the collaboration between Scott Ryan and Nash Edgerton is so interesting too. Scott made a film based on this character with Nash’s help 20 years ago and then seemingly did nothing but work in a country town as a taxi driver, then a decade plus later was able to get this incredible show produced.

April Reid

That's a really good point about Dave. I think his Letterboxd review blurb about the film said as much too

Javin Mather

Feels like Dave's answer for this is Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, or at least he basically said as much, many times, when that was out and when it won all those awards. Dunno about Jeff and Devindra though.

Stranger2Reality

Do you guys have plans or strategies to handle these next four years? It's day one and it's already a nightmare.

Stranger2Reality

To be clear, I did not go to a theater during COVID lockdown. 😷

Lawson S

IMO, Harrison Ford’s best role (and his favorite script ever). When he’s gone, I’ll remember him more for Shrinking than for Indiana Jones.

Eric Wilson

I’ve always perceived Jeff as energetically aligned with amplifying / sharing what excites him, to “love loving things” and spread the good stuff — more so than always engaging in pure criticism. I could understand if that might make him more reluctant to go too negative when others like something, like a fear of preventing someone else from loving something? Anyway, I don’t mind it! But always value Jeff’s opinion when he shares it, positive or otherwise.

Eric Wilson

Not a topic but a hearty recommendation that I think all of you would like, and that I don’t recall ever hearing mention of on the show: Mr. Inbetween (on Hulu/FX) It’s an Australian show about a hit man balancing a somewhat regular life. Created, written, and acted by one guy who puts in an incredibly interesting and layered performance. Super dark at times, hilarious or heartfelt at others, and has great tension. Nothing quite like it.

Eric Wilson

Whatever happened to Jeff's TiVo series 3 from 2016's episode 396? Did Jeff ever test that lifetime service warranty? What comparable devices do you guys use today, if any?

Lazerflex

I just don't like that when his opinion greatly differs from Dave and Devindra, he is reluctant to express that opinion. Don't hide it, tell us passionately why you did in fact like CODA, and what you didn't like about "I saw TV glow." The other two hosts don't have this problem, but Jeff wants to soften his opinion if Dave and Devindra are on the opposite end of it.

Papool Chaudhari

I think the show should address, on a main episode (or an after dark, something!), that you don't use hashtag slashtag anymore and officially encourage one single alternative method to recommend movies, whether that be emails or a bluesky post or whatever. Preferably one that you 3 all see, like the way you all saw slashtag tweets before Elon Musk destroyed twitter. It's crazy to me that the show has been silent on hashtag slashtag for over a year now. It used to be a BIG part of the show! People should be told on a main episode (or an after dark, I guess) what the single preferred method is now and that should be promoted the way hashtag slashtag was promoted each and every week for YEARS. Maybe it should be telling everyone, each week, to send recommendations by using #slashtag on bluesky? And to also address whether the voicemail line is ever checked anymore and if it will ever be used again (if not, just officially kill it then.). Voicemail number is listed in the show notes every episode but a voicemail left on the voicemail number hasn't been played on the show for YEARS. Even leading up to Episode #800, not once was the audience told they could call the voicemail line. We're LONG overdue for this sort of housekeeping on a main episode (or after dark) re: hashtag slashtag, voicemails and the show notes. Thanks!

Papool Chaudhari

Would love to hear where Jeff and Davindra are currently at with the apple vision pro are they still using it? What are your thoughts on using vr headset such as meta quest 3 for watching media/movies? I just picked up a meta quest 3 and am pretty blown away by watching it on the big screen! Also really loved the book segment you did a few eps back! would love it if you did that more regularly even once a month or something? I read Nuclear War A Scenario and then immediately started to google do I need planning permission to build a bunker in my back garden! Thanks Dave! :) Anyways, I love the show! Keep it up Dan in Ireland

Film Court Dilemma: Recently my husband and I were discussing our favorite “sports” movie. I said my favorite was JERRY MCGUIRE, but my husband said that it doesn’t count as a “sports” movie because it doesn’t center on a sports player or coach. I still think it counts because a sport is a main, consistent plot point. Can you settle this debate for us and let us know what criteria must be present for a movie to fall under the “sports” movie genre (I assume this might be a similar debate to whether DIE HARD is a Christmas movie)? Also, what is your favorite “sports” movie?

Ellen Skirvin

Nah, it's just you. It's a perfectly valid expression, stop policing other people's speech.

Lazerflex

Books on the shelf = cultivated intellectual, BluRays on the shelf = deranged movie nerd

Hey folks, I just want to know if there is a way to download an archive of all your podcasts? I've started listening when Adam (?) was on the show and want to revisit the early ages.

Marcus

Hey fellas, I hope you’re doing well as we all enter another hellish era of American history. Almost one year ago, I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. After six months of chemotherapy and recovery I am now in full remission. During the worst periods of the past year, your podcast brought me a real sense of normalcy and a gravitational center that kept me alive. Your ability to be deeply human and personal with your approach to this show means so much to me and helped keep me going. I know this work may often seem inconsequential, but I truly believe this podcast helped in some small way to save my life. So thank you very much! My question is, how often do major personal life events impact your willingness to see certain movies? And if you do see them, how willing are you to let the movie stand on its own separate from your own "baggage"? I'm thinking specifically about the Florence Pugh Andrew Garfield movie "We Live in Time." I really thought I would be able to bring myself to see it, but I have yet to, and now I'm not sure I will any time soon.

Ernest Calderon

What are your favorite film scores from 2024?

Sam Landon

Guys, would you ever do a live show podcast episode (I.e. in front of an audience)? And if so would you do it in London?

Lahiru

Hey guys, wanted to see if any of you have listened to the recent Lin-Manuel Miranda & Eisa Davis' musical concept album Warriors. While not a movie itself, it's film-adjacent as it's based on the 1979 cult classic (my all-time favorite film!). Curious your take on it if you've given a listen.

Stephen Shaffer

I love the Dune-score but personally I can't really pick out the theme in my head right now. Which track is the core melody, do you think?

Linus

I’d argue there’s nothing wrong with letting your current mood affect your review. We all view films with the feelings and perspectives of the current world around us.

Eric Wu

Dune.

Eric Wu

Regarding showing your kids STAR WARS I say don’t. DON’T DON’T don’t DON’T Let them discover on their own. Oh sure, leave em clues whether it’s a baseball card with a two robots stuck in a desolate land.

Mr. Ford

Hi guys - are there any character actors/actresses that you enjoy watching? Up-and-comers or established actors that continue to build to their resume that you wish had more exposure or glow up? One person that Jeff and I really enjoy is Jim Cummings. Thanks! Danny, Seattle

Daniel

Jeff has mentioned The River and Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes recently, which are both great. I haven't seen it yet, but they all praised Perfect Days recently. I'm sure they could all pick some more great ones though.

David Skinner

I'm not sure if it's just me, but I feel that there's some lack of really memorable movie-themes these days. I can hum melodies from Superman, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars and many others in a second, but those are ”old”. What's the latest example of a theme from a film you remember the melody from? For me, I think it might be Wonder Woman's theme from BvS, but that's like 8 years ago. Maybe Giacchino's Batman melody with a gun to my head but I'm not really sure.

Linus

Dear filmcast: Not movie related, exactly: Do you have a favorite cocktail or specific order at a bar? I turned 21 last year and want to brighten my horizons!

Josh Erales

I would assume that being professional movie critics requires a certain level of objectivity. How do you ensure that you’re being objective when reviewing a movie? How can you ensure your current mood isn’t having an effect on your review?

Eric

Thanks for the recent book recommendations, I’ve read Nuclear War and listened to the Pirenesi audiobook and they were both excellent. What are your top 5 favourite books of all time? Any of your favourite books which you think have particularly good audiobooks?

Peter Tribe

Dear filmcasters: Do you think that canceled ACME/Loony tunes movie will ever see the light of day? It frustrates me to no end that evil attorney John Cena is stuck in a hard drive somewhere! Love you and all that you do.

Calvin Jones

Have you ever ingested something that’s older than you? (ex. wine, whiskey) If so, what was is and how did it taste?

Loren Morris

With the holiday season just passing, we know that you a lot of movies to cram in for the end of the year, both for awards season and for your end of the year list, but I'm curious if there are holiday movies that you watch traditionally and if you got to watch them this year? I know I have a handful of holiday movies I try to watch every year, but I didn't get to them all. Thanks for the great shows as always.

Mitchipedia

The Filmcast frequently features discussion of the content hosted on various streaming services, but something you rarely talk about is the stability/lack thereof inherent in each service’s app. To me, that’s one of the major deciding factors when I’m choosing whether to watch something. I know there’s a lot of variability by platform, but on our two-year-old Sony smart TV, there’s a definite divide between the apps that work reliably ( Netflix, Max the one the watch for HBO, Apple TV+, Disney+) and the ones that really don’t work (Paramount+, Peacock, the godawful NFL app). As a result, whenever Devindra recommends something on Paramount+, I find myself wondering if the show in question will even load, or if it will just crap out, like the app did in the middle of Evil season 3. Anyway: Do you see similar variability between different apps? Do you have any recommendations around how to get apps to work more consistently? Am I naive to think that a smart TV can handle this task, or should I get some sort of Roku or something to run our apps instead? -Luke from Santa Ana, CA

Luke Watkins

Hey guys. Just a comment this time. Jeff is always saying he “doesn’t want to yuck anybody’s yum.” Well Jeff, I’m sorry to tell you that you, in fact, yuck my yum every time you use that absolutely repulsive phrase. Surely there’s a way to say the same thing that doesn’t make my (and I assume others’) skin crawl. Perhaps something involving rain and parades? Best regards. Love the show.

Sean Lass

I love that theatres are doing this way more frequently! It used to be about 1-2 a month with maybe 2-3 showtimes. Now they play for a week or more and Cineplex this month has been doing screenings for 8 David Fincher movies. They are doing it for all of January with a mix of showtimes for each and you could see up to 3 essentially back to back any given day. I assume it was to coincide with the Se7en IMAX re-release, I managed to catch 6 of the 8 and had a great time

Jacob Chimilar

Repeating something I had emailed a few days ago. I wanted to bring a foreign film to your attention that you may have missed, which is on MUBI in the US right now. C’e Ancora Domani (Italian for There’s Still Tomorrow, pronounced “chay” ancora domani) was the highest-grossing film in Italy in 2023, beating out the likes of Barbie and Oppenheimer. It’s a beautiful period piece with a small cast and truly powerful acting; my mom has been going to the movie theater every single week for almost 20 years, and this is the first film in years that inspired her to call her mother and all of her sisters and daughters to tell them they had to watch it. I won’t spoil anything about it, except to say that the fact that this artsy, black and white movie managed to beat out Barbie at the box office in Italy, shows that the world that it portrays, distant as it may seem to us now, is very much real in the memories of our parents and grandparents. I think Jeff would like it the most (and not just because I’m profiling him for being Italian), but I’d sincerely recommend it to all of you.

Fernando

Not a question just a comment I feel compelled to share regarding the “Barbenheimer” portmanteau of the summer for Furiosa and Garfield. Can’t remember where I heard it but the summer of ‘24 was the summer of Lasagna-Taylor Joy G’bless

Casey

Hey Guys 👋 No question. Just a comment… You recently talked about going to film concerts. I wanted to share that I just finished a weekend of performing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban! (3 concerts. 2 days) We all knew that John Williams was a genius, but did you know he was crazy!!??! I perform with the symphony regularly but a John Williams film concert is RIDDIKULUS!! (All praise and credit to percussion!!) Also… I cried each concert. It’s crazy sounding but being in the midst of John Williams score and hearing in the background “Expecto Patronum!!” He’s (John Williams) is a master! He gets credit. But I argue, until you see the musicians working their asses off… you don’t even know…

R Ellis Bardin

Hello, good sirs, This is my 2nd time writing in, I believe, so pretty new to this. Let's throw cinematic objectivity and execution of craft out for a second and go for the sheerly subjective: what films have made you feel the most seen in life? This could be tied to a specific event or memory, a role you've held in life, what a relationship meant to you, anything personal really that felt so well seen and manifested in a film. Examples for myself more recently would include AFTERSUN per the tensions that reside in me as a father and not wanting my own darkness and hidden wounds to impact my daughter, and farther back, it'd be THE SIXTH SENSE, Bruce Willis' care and stalwart dedication to his field bearing direct influence upon my becoming a mental health therapist for 14 years now.

Javin Mather

I was wondering if any of you have seen the Eric Bana movies The Dry & Force Of Nature: The Dry 2? They're based on a series of Australian books and were decent size successes down here. Worth a watch if you get a chance & love Bana's work

David Woodley

With the recent controversy surrounding the use of AI in the brutalist, what do you all think about movies using ai in “assistance” or in generation? Personally I am against the use of ai, but I’m also an editor, and I know there are tons of tools labeled “ai” which really are quite useful -and invisible to the audience, eg roto tools, vocal sweetening, and transcription to say the least. At the studio I currently work at there is an absolute no tolerance policy of generative ai use for generation of images or ideas. In the case of the brutalist specifically, I think its use tarnishes the performance from Adrien Brody. I only see this becoming more relevant as time goes on and as more dystopian tech companies integrate these processes in obvious and hidden ways into all of our software. It’s such a moral grey area, and in this case I do believe it lessens the depth of the art. Somewhat related note, I find it interesting that by and large people seem pretty out on ai in films, not too mad about that.

Doug Mahoney

Apologies is this was posted or covered elsewhere… Jeff! When is your book going to be available for purchase if we did not back it in the early backing days? Do you anticipate it being available is a physical bookstore? Very much so looking forward.

Justin Rubin

Simple question. I was just wondering if you guys watched "Shrinking"? I don't remember if it was ever mentioned. It's Bill Lawrence's new show. Second season just ended. I think the show is amazing with so much heart. Great characters, Great emotional growth, Great needle drops, etc. Was just curious on your guys' thoughts. Thanks!

Kevin Luu

I'm just guessing but probably because they are covered in plastic? Library books look kinda bad too for that reason because they laminate the covers.

Jacob Chimilar

When is Jeff going to rewatch The Mummy?

Tyler Sexton

So older movies have come back to cinemas (The Indiana Jones movies, The Abyss, Harry Potter movies, Ferris Bueller's Day Off , etc), so what’s your take on taking the younger love ones to see them? I’ve taken my 12 yr to see the above over the past year & I must say, it’s something I’ll take with me to the end. At his age, the only way he can truly experience these movies is in a closed environment setting. At home, he’s just not that engaged. This breaks me, but at the theater I have hope.

Alejandro Garza

Hello gang I know this happened in December but I wanted to see if any of you heard about the re-release of the Daft Punk movie Interstella 5555. The movie was released in concordance with the album Discovery in 2001. For one day an upscaled version of the movie was released in theaters mid December. Me being a big fan was excited up until I saw the trailer of the upscaled version. This new version very obviously used AI to upscale the movie, with some parts missing eyes and all around just not fitting the same soft vibe of the original. I still went to see it in theaters and close up shots were fine but any crowd shot was just a hot mess. I'm worried this use of AI is just the first of much more half assed upscaling to come.

Felipe Ochoa

I have a question about your top 10 lists. I make my own private list but will continue to revise it into the new year as it takes me a while to catch up on everything - but of course I have the luxury of not having a deadline. I know you see everything you can before the end of the year, but obviously there will always be movies you can’t catch in time. Do you ever go back and revise your lists, even if just for the benefit of your own record-keeping, or do you treat them as representative of a moment in time? Do you have any memorable regrets of particular movies you saw after your top 10 episode of a given year that you wish you’d included in your list?

Chris A.

Hi there! My wife and I are honeymooning in Japan this summer, and we’re spending the next few months immersing ourselves in Japanese cinema to prepare for the trip. We’re already working our way through all the Studio Ghibli films, Godzilla, and some Kurosawa classics, but we’d love more recommendations! Are there any must-watch films—classic or modern—that you’d suggest? We’re open to any genre or anything that captures the culture, history, or unique storytelling styles of Japanese filmmakers. Thanks so much!

Zach Tyroler

Hey guys, I’ve been anxiously awaiting the next open mailbox to ask you this question because it might actually be a tough one. I was recently talking with a movie-loving friend who is about to have a baby and we talked about how when you have a baby there is usually a two year span where you just don’t see movies. Of course that doesn’t hold true if you have a great support system that gives you free childcare, have a ton of money for sitters, or if reviewing movies is a source of income (wink), but a lot of folks in the U.S. don’t fall in those 3 categories. So my question is this: In your lifetime, if you had to pick a two-year period of movies to miss, what would that two year period be? The easier version of this question is what two-year span of movies would you give up seeing on the big screen, but the harder version is what two-year span would you give up seeing *forever*? I tried answering myself and could never peg it down. Even COVID lockdown years had some bangers! Extremely interested in what each of you would pick.

Lawson S

Apologies in advance for being one of those "more of a comment than a question" people, but I missed the deadline for voicemails and wanted to share here how I ended up finding y'all's podcast what must have been a decade ago now. Basically, I was 15ish and searching for fanfiction online. And I'm not sure if any of y'all are familiar with this, but for a while fanfiction that was romantic / sexual in nature (and usually gay) was called "slash" fanfic. I forget what search bar I typed it into but my teenage self was 100% searching for gay X-Men smut and accidentally stumbled upon my longest running podcast! Thought that might give y'all a chuckle. Thanks for being parasocial buds.

Matteo Alexice

Have you ever had an idea for a movie? Maybe you put a lot of thought into it or maybe it was just in passing, but either way you thought "that would make a good movie".

NICK LAWS

Question for Jeff and Devindra. As a father how do you plan on compartmentalizing the upcoming administration? I don't want to waste the prime years of my three kids' childhood being pissed off about this all the time. I'm having a hard time and I don't think tuning out completely is the right answer. Also as a 13-year American Government teacher, I can't escape this at work either. Thank you guys so much for the escapism and advice you provided. -Brad (Charlotte, NC)

Why do you think dvds and blue rays look bad on the shelf, but books look great?

Jack

I want to hear about the most mundane shit you could think of. Please. The world is ending and everything is on fire. Just tell me what your favorite pizza topping is or what you set your thermostat to.

Drew Bonner Music

Dave- I know you spend some time watching movies and/or TV whilst on the treadmill. Do you have any criteria on what makes a good treadmill watch? I have less time on my hands now as a father, so I’m tempted to use treadmill time to catch up on certain shows like skeleton crew, but I watched the first episode and couldn’t help feeling like maybe I should’ve found the time for it on the big screen instead.

Alexander Murrell

Not film related, but what are your favorite music albums?
