Hello everyone! My wife Jennie is making her first Record Club appearance of 2024! This week we are talking about everyone's favorite band Big Star! jk We've never heard of this band before, but what did we think of it...more importantly what did the band think of it? Let's find out together!
Working on a fix for this.

Always great to have Jenny on! π I like the addition of playing the music a bit too! This was a good episode. Though I will say as far as Big Star I'm only really familiar with #1 Record, which is dope! This one sounds different and I'm going to have to give some more in depth listening. Very excited for Brian Wilson's Smile though!! It's him recreating the album that was supposed to be the followup to their classic album Pet Sounds. But due to many issues including Brian Wilson's not great mental state at the time the album was never released in full. Not until Brian Wilson's Smile and later The Beach Boys' The Smile Sessions compilation album. It's a great listen! And I can't wait to hear what you think!

This grew on me. I was not in the mood to listen to this the first time through, but I gave it a few more listens and it's not bad. I'd say 3/5. It does blow my mind how a band can be one of the first examples of prog rock and you never hear them mentioned.

Didnβt like this one tbh. Kinda felt like a mess to me without much of a direction. Sort of like a bunch of guys just making shit up which Iβm usually cool with but this just didnβt connect with me. Also the main dudes voice started annoying me a lot on the second half. I will say though that there are some hype moments on the first half of the album. 2/5 for me.

I've been listening to Elliott Smith non-stop this year, Record Club is always so serendipitous.
Anyways--

I truthfully only listened to this album 1 time this past week so my rating isn't the most fair compared to others' but, I couldn't fuck with it and the tracklisting pissed me off.

BTW Shawn, most songs will only give you a copyright notification. But things like Eagles (ugh) or records from ECM will straight up block your video worldwide. Be careful!

I saw the Box Tops on the Happy Together tour back in 2017 I think? It was definitely after Alex Chilton passed - I mostly went for The Turtles and Ran Dante. The Box Topsβ Cry Like a Baby and Soul Deep are worth listening to!

You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) by Sylvester fucking ruuuuuules - itβs an excellent disco track! Sylvesterβs voice was incredible, if you end up liking it I recommend his other stuff too!
I mentioned this before but Iβll say it again - I listened to Big Starβs 3 albums last year and I was not a huge fan overall. Across the three thereβs probably an albumβs worth of songs I really enjoy (maybe a double albumβs worth?). Something didnβt click but Iβm into folks they influenced like The Bangles.
The love for Big Star kind of reminds me of the love for The Velvet Underground, in that the folks that get on with them really do love and cherish Big Star and a lot of the fans are musicians, themselves.
Kizza Me, Jesus Christ, For You and Canβt Have Me were my favorite tracks, a lot of the others kind of ran together so I appreciate the music clips as a reminder!

"Nightime", "Holocaust" and "Dream Lover" are the three saddest songs ever made

One of the most beautiful albums ever made. Like listening to something falling apart as they're being recorded. Very few things like this -- not even in their discography, or in the Chris Bell posthumous stuff.
Alex' "get me out of here, I hate it here" will forever haunt me. So will "Holocaust".
