Bases question! Need your vote!

So, as I'm doing the bases for the prison right now, I was wondering, do you really want 60 and 100mm bases? I've never seen them printed, so I want to ask you your opinion with a poll :

And also feel free to give your detailled answer in the comments! Maybe we can try to change this month and see how it goes and adjust later!

Because it is for diorama and not gameplay, it doesn't have to be round or square or exactly 100mm. Irregular 100mm-ish is fine as long as it fits the theme texture wise.

Eric Matecki

Good point! Noted!

I like the 100mm for small dioramas (instead of CDs...). The 60mm I never printed one... A single 100mm instead of all the 60mm and 100mm would be my choice. Because it is for diorama and not for game play, it doesn't need to be round or square or exactly 100mm... would even be better in a somewhat irregular shape...

Eric Matecki

Would love a more variety of small round bases and less square ones.

Aaron Betzen

You should make a large creature every once in a while to fit those bases ;)

I have been using the larger ones to base Reaper and other minis.

Enrique Avalos

@ Timo Oh I see what you mean now. That eliminates the scaling issue for sure, but just requires a little extra effort. :)

Christian Savarda

I like having a few options for large bases. That said, it's usually very simple to scale a smaller base up on the X and Y to whatever is needed.

Alex A

I agree that it would be good to decide based on what is in the set. If the set is all medium characters, then just medium should be fine. But if you ever do a large creature, animal, or vehicle it would be nice to have the matching large base.

Brandon Blewett

that's right, that's why I like to cut my bases out of the large formats and don't scale e.g. a round 30 to around 40, then cut off the corners to get 30x30

Timo

Yep, scaling up or down too much isn't ideal for sure. Turning a 32mm into a 40mm is good, turning a 25mm into a 100..not so much :D

Depending on what kind of details are on the base, you may run into scale issues, for example a skull on a huge base that's scaled down will look way too small for a human head. Also, height issues to a degree, since you don't want it to print lower height than normal.

Christian Savarda

I mostly play dnd, so I wind up rescaling the larger bases just a little bit to 50 and 75 mm more often than not. That said, I use the big bases fairly frequently; i just finished a set of reaper bones models on the large ruined church bases from April, and am working on a box of fenrisian wolves that are going on your larger forest bases.

I like your big bases for scenery and monsters. We have dungeon, town, wood and desert covered tho. I'd like some bits instead of big bases.

Sebastian Dzik

Even as a layperson, a large one can easily be made into a smaller one. I use e.g. square 30, it only brings me something from around 40, because I can adapt it to 30x30 -> therefore rather bigger

Timo

the giant bases feel like good stages for dioramas I think

Ryder Frankle

Honestly I don't use bases for minis but I'm using them for adding parts on my sceneries. So Big one are very cool for me 😊

Good point too. Maybe for these kind of months I could do 1 base for the cart (or big monster or whatever), but when not needed just avoid it.

I like having the big ones for some of the terrain like possibly the cart this month because when putting it on the table things are less likely to be knocked over when they are on a base

Kyle Cooney

Good point indeed.

''Issue'' is, we've been asked about squares bases quite a few times now, but I've never seen the big ones anywhere. So maybe it's not the best use of my ressources. People asked for 40mm round too as it's use in wargame quite a lot.

From what I've seen, most models that large come with a unique/dedicated base already.

Christian Savarda

That being said, I do sell more Vae Victis 60mm bases than any of my other patrons, so I'll be happy either way!

Chris Wade

As a merchant I like having the larger bases, but they don't sell as well. More 25mm and 32mm bases would probably mean more sales. And we can always scale the 25mm bases up to 60mm or 100mm if needed.

Chris Wade

I mostly use plain bases, but I'd rather have options for larger ones than not :)
