Poll regarding the 5usd / props and sceneries tier! Please read!

Hello everyone, Jonathan here!

I wanted to ask you about something I've been thinking about recently.

As you know starting next month, we'll be revamping a bit the way our releases works, to fit better with what we're excited to do, and to be able to work better overall!  (All infos here if you want to give your 2cents  https://www.patreon.com/posts/55148618 )

There are a LOT of things I want to do in the future, so stay tunned, but right now, let's dive into today's topic :

What is the issue :

As you know, the 5usd tier is props / sceneries only.

It's personally a huge part of the pressure of running this Patreon, and we have only less than 40 people subscribed in it. So I'm wondering, could it be tweaked so it's not that big of a weight anymore?

Because of the fact that we have people waiting JUST for that, I'm always pressuring myself into doing an ''acceptable'' number of props, so people don't feel cheated.

But it's not ideal for me.  Sometimes I would want to do just one big prop, more complex, but then I'm worried patrons wouldn't be happy about just ''one'' thing, even though it's a more valuable model in terms of time and work.  I know visual quantity is something people like when it comes to Patreons.

And sometimes I prefer working on more minis ( like this month with the dwarves), but then I have way less time for props and I'll do some to complement the release.

The possibles solutions to the problem :

1 - The one I would prefer, we hide the tier (people in it won't be removed, but at least they know that it'll most likely not be as many in quantity all the time), so we don't run the risk of making a fasle promise to future people, we don't want to disappoint and feel like people are being scammed.

I would be able to focus on more miniatures eventually !

I really want to be able to dive into cooler stuff, mounted minis, big foes, and maybe loyalty rewards in the future!

You will still get props / scatters, sometimes smaller things, weapons and such, and sometimes it can be bigger, and I could focus on a really cool props (siege weapon for exemple, to give an idea of the scale). Basically what I think matches the theme without forcing it.

2 - We don't change anything and I still try to offer a good amount of props, but I don't think I'll be able to expend more on the minis in the future (we're just two people with a skill that will evolve of course, but I can't double my output in a matter of weeks unfortunately haha).

3 - Any other ideas?

Let us know what you think in the comments as usual, it's always very valuable!

It's generally easier to scale up than scale down but in this case the Lychee supports are pretty decent for that. I tend to leave them as-is or scale them down 10% at most, though I adjust it depending on what I need.

From what I see around and saw creators speak about, 32 seems to be done quite a lot. I feel like 28 is mostly used by wargamers. Could be interesting to poll for it for sure, so at least we know!

Oh I'm not saying offering both. Find out what your customers are using and go to that scale by default. If the majority of people are going with 32mm, hey, you're gold. If they're not, going to that scale that is in common use is the easiest way to support them. Heck, maybe most of the people are scaling up to 35mm these days.

Joe Kushner

Offering both would be quite a bit of work support wise though! :/

I(n terms of what you're providing, a poll to see what size people are printing the minis might be useful. I know several people, including myself, shrink the minis down to 28 heroic mm scale. Having them in that scale to begin with would be ideal. Props I'm not too worried about. I can take it or leave it.

Joe Kushner

Don't worry will still do some!

Your inspiration is important compared to why a patron subscribes. Personally I subscribe for the props.

Joshua Grandt

Thank you :D Oh don't worry I know haha, always a pleasure to see you paint them!! I still plan on doing them, but if I can focus on fewer but nicer, it's great! Let's start September and see how it goes! I bet things will evolve and fall into place soon!

As usual Donna, thanks so much for your kind words and being understanding of the situation! Yeah giving a couple of minis isn't a bad idea for sure :D

I absolutely love your medium and small sized props. They're what got me subscribed in the first place, but the excellent exciting, unique minis are a big reason why I stay every month. I am so down for just seeing what props you feel like without the added pressure!

I love your work. It's definitely the right time to reshape everything to reduce stress, and it sounds like hiding that tier is the right thing for you. If you're ever worried they're a bit short one month maybe you could throw them a figure or two to fill it out :)

Donna Crawford

I have to say I do love the NPC feels too, with the mix of races :)

Donna Crawford

Thank you!! We'll still be making NPCs / civilian models each months, so no worries on that front :D Thanks a lot for your support, greatly appreciated!!

Thanks a lot! Don't worry there will always be NPCs each months, and if we can or the design calls for it we'll make them or the props / scatter supportless!

Thanks a lot!!! More than 90 votes in the end, so at least a good amount were present for that!! But all the comments are very supportive so it's great! Thanks for the kind words!

Your health is more important, so do what is best for you. I'm mostly here for your non combat npc modells, especially those that are not human. That is really hard to find elsewere. I will still support you those month that are only combat modells, but it's those "civilians" in between that keeps me here. Terrain is quite easy to find elsewere so that is not so important for me.

Mats Rozéndess

I really love the props and scatter terrain but at the same time, I want you to enjoy what you're doing for us and not feel rushed. My resin printer has bit the dust so i'm printing everything on my Ender3 and the fact that you make some cool minis that don't need supports is excellent, I hope you will still make some that don't require supports. I'm happy to see where you take us. Keep up the great work.

Jimmy Trinket

I absolutely get that. It will give you more creative freedom and a much lower chance of burnout, too.

I'm a little sad to hear there are so few of us here. Do whatever you need to in order to keep from stressin out and build your brand. You do good stuff, its what brought us here to begin with. Others will recognize that with time, I'm sure. We have faith in you.

Thanks!! Yeah good point, that's clearly why I'm asking now, so we can start fresh in September!! Totally agree that stressing over it won't ge good at all for the long run!

Thanks a lot Carrie!!! Hopefully it'll work yes haha, that's the plan! And thank you Jon, happy to have good people here!

That's understandable too, and that's a good perspective to have, thanks for your input!!

As discussed on the Discord, that's not a terrible idea, but not sure if applicable to all themes! I'll think about it still!!

I still want to do some!! But without having that pressure of doing ''enough''. If I want to do just one nice ballista, then go! for exemple of course! And sometimes more smaller stuff etc.

hahaha very true!!! But good if it doesn't annoy 50% of our Patrons in the process :D Totally agree!! Just seeing the result in the polls I feel like a big weight has been lifted from me!

It’s your patreon mate. You need to do what inspires YOU. Then in the long run, we benefit from that anyway. You do you mate.

I say hide the tier, and include the more generic minis (like the guards) in what you give the 5 dollar patrons.

Though this has no effect on my life personally, I just want you to know that you've made my day. Both what you said and what you did were very kind - so thanks for spreading kindness. :)

I really love your props and scenery, and I hope you still intend to create them. The quality of the scatter pieces is actually what brought me to this Patreon. That said, I am not in that $5 tier and never considered it when joining. I’d say hide it/make it limited to 40 subscribers.

Rosewood

I very rarely list the props for sale because they're small and a hassle to sell for very little money, so (in purely selfish reasons) I would gladly trade less props for more minis.

Chris Wade

This question and post made it an easy decision for me to update to the $10 tier. Cheers to a more simplified process and hopefully less stress.

Exactly. Read your last post about your work flow. I’d say if you’re rebooting the Patreon go all the way. Like the plague town was prop heavy I loved it. I’ll post some pics on Instagram soon. The dwarf month had lots of killer minis I’m going to love those and do t need as many props… keep doing excellent work and they will come around or not, but if it’s stressing you out and you get burnt out, we all lose in the end.

Eric Lee

Yeah, exactly!!! This month as I had fun on the dwarves, clearly I did WAY less props (still some to post), and I was in a lot of stress because of it , like '''quick quick I gotta do something''! It's 100% understandable if these people don't want to stay, but it's ''only'' 40 people, so it says something too.

I’d just move to one tier. While I really enjoy your props and scenery, I also really enjoy your minis. I guess my question is would those 40 people pay the extra 5$ to also get some cool minis. And if not is it worth your time as an artist to keep 40 around and the aggravation it causes or focus on the 500 who pay ten dollars for whatever you guys might create.

Eric Lee

You guys need to grow as artists and continue to refine your identity and what you want to accomplish. I've been here since the beginning and the things you guys can create when your inspired is truly amazing; That giant cathedral that clipped together or the Not-Strahd ruins were truly inspired! And that's just terrain -- My love for your miniatures has been expressed loudly many times, haha! I'm sure everyone would agree that seeing you guys produce things that your actually inspired by will be far more amazing than "going through the motions". Just my 2 cents - I'm ride or die no matter what you do!
