Arcane: League of Legends Episode 5 Reaction (Full-length Watch Along)

The sort of "writerly" term for video game writing is "Ludonarrative", referring to the way the mechanics of the interactive medium work with the story, so we have terms like "ludonarritave dissonance" and "ludonarrative harmony" to describe when the mechanical aspects of video games either work with/against the narrative, and what I think Arcane is good at is that in a given match of League of Legends, there arn't really heroes or villians, it's like a mucical chairs game of who's on which team, and so this show is about the whole ensemble. (I can't remember if I may have left a comment like this already, sorry if I'm repeating for no reason lol)

For the first point, I think that’s reasonable (in terms of the distrust). But in terms of Cait expecting Vi to give her the info, it’s not like it’s for no reason ya know what I mean? Like it’s not a selfish “take” and no give, Cait needs the info if they’re going to find Jinx. So that I see as less reasonable. You can’t be mad someone risked their job to take you out of jail for information and be surprised when they demand the information. And my other problem with that is just that Cait being in the brothel is pointless. She’s not serving as a distraction and Vi is talking to the owner anyway so why even make a big deal about having to “push her out of her comfort zone” if it doesn’t change anything? For the 2nd thing: I guess my issue is that I don’t see that as a direct result of Vi leaving Cait at the brothel. If Sevika had seen Cait from the beginning, Cait would lose the element of surprise. I see that as more of a consequence of Vi’s arrogance (in terms of thinking she knows better when things have changed a lot) in comparison to a consequence of her treatment of Caitlyn. Like she didn’t get wounded because she treated Caitlyn poorly, she got wounded because she’s unprepared for a new reality. And even though her arrogance may be connected to her attitude, I see that as separate things. I think it may be better with an example but the way I’d personally adjust this would be that Cait needs to talk to the brothel lady because the lady won’t give the info to Vi. Maybe the lady wasn’t cool with Vander or thinks because Jinx is working with Silco, Vi is too. Something that makes it so Caitlyn *needs* to play the game ya know? Or maybe it’s Vi’s attitude that the lady doesn’t like, and so it’s a mutual “Caitlyn you need to act like this” and “Vi, you need to tone it down”. Like neither of their approaches get anywhere until they actually balance each other out. But that’s off the top of my head, I’d have to think about it. I also think how Vi talks about her appearance is a little off-putting. Like you’d think it would go the “Caitlyn has more than her looks” route but instead she plays into exactly what Vi says - which makes it seem narratively like Vi is right - and the only indication the show makes to criticize Vi’s previous attitude is saying she’s a good shot. I guess she’s pretty AND a good shot but it feels like they are undermining the point they wanted to make. Whereas having Caitlyn actually do something in the brothel that contradicted Vi’s comments about her appearance, but still played into being manipulative / “trying to give other people what they want to get what you want” would have been more effective.

I’ve literally never seen someone complain about the Vi/Caitlyn stuff before. 1) Vi has zero reason to trust Caitlyn, she’s a member of the organization who killed her parents and Marcus (an enforcer) also sold out Vander to Silco. Vi being pissed that Cait just expects Vi to give her whatever info she needs is valid, the enforcers have taken so much from her already. And what Cait is asking for is for Vi to offer up her sister. Why would she not be bitter? 2) I don’t see how you saw Vi being a jerk to Cait as having no consequences when her ditching Cait at the brothel to go fight Sevika alone resulted in her getting seriously wounded.
