NEW VIDEO: Why Don't We Shoot Nuclear Waste Into Space?

Here in the Kurzgesagt labs we test very important ideas to see what happens when you blow things up or play with black holes. Many of you suggested that we look into an idea that sounds reasonable: Shooting nuclear waste into space. It is one of those concepts that seems like an easy fix for one of the main problems with nuclear energy. But it turns out this idea is not just bad but horribly bad and it gets worse the longer you think about it.

if you store it then there would be some risks regarding workers

A duck...

I was under the impression we had yet to find a section of the ocean without something living in it. Obviously the shallows & shores are far more populated, but even the marianas trench has living things in it.

You did not say the biggest reason not to shoot it into space: We might need it later. These elements are relatively rare. And future scientists / society may have good use for them. Do not discard it! Just store it and wait.

What is the bias that wants to exclude the sea animals from anything?

Igor Marcossi

Surprising but it makes sense, at least up until the point where we trivially move things to space. It seems there's a lot of stuff beneath us where we can fit basically all garbage anyway. Just have to dig deep enough. So, what about "Digging! Best idea ever?"

Kristofer Älvring

Well, this depends! The oceans near the shore and shallow waters are heavily populated (by animals and plants) but the deep oceans are dead, empty deserts, except from same rare oasis here and there.

I love you guyz to death!! But, very rare-occasionally, I do catch an implicit bias in your script. In this one you contrasted "the ocean" with "the inhabited parts of the world." But the ocean is inhabited, too. By some very, VERY amazing and intelligent creatures.

Incredible facts! I definitely love your amazing episodes that touch on social issues. Thank you for your work!

I wonder if this was suggested so much because of ignorant politicians in America suggesting it in their campaign ads and speeches for the last decade 😅😂 I'm certain their are other factors, but I get the sense that at least in the US this is the main, if not only reason, the idea has gained any public traction. Plus mistrust of scientists and all that 😥

Lots of laughs, yeah I know it's a serious subject, but laughing helps! Peace!

I like the meme lingo. It made me laugh.

Peter G

Great video! I thought the meme lingo came off pretty awkwardly, though.
