Episode 17: License to Kill

AUDIO NOTE: Alice's mixer reset to default before this recording and we didn't notice, but her audio track exported with mine and Abi's audio mixed in. I did the best I could but there could be some wierdness with the way Abi sounds.
Welsh Bond Returns for his second and final movie, and it's barely even a Bond Movie
James's best friend Felix is maimed and widowed by a "Latin American" drugs cartel, and he vows revenge. Armed only with his wits, 5 million dollars in cash, and two pockets full of maggots, Bond embarks on a classic 80s roaring rampage of revenge!

This Podcast Is Dedicated To Sharkey, the classic character from the movie License to Kill
I remember watching this movie as a kid on the VHS recording off the TV.
The scene with Crest in the pressure chamber was edited slightly. They showed Sanchez hit the valve with the axe and immediately cut to the strawberry jam on the window...which was even more scary 😆

I’m relistening to all the James Bond episodes now and I’ve made it back here where I started. This was my first episode of the podcast and I remember wondering if it’d be something I’d be able to get into bc a) Abby’s audio was really bad and I wondered “is it always like this? Wierd” and b) all the in jokes and references went so over my head the episode was somewhat impenetrable. But whatever, the next episode is Goldeneye, that’s my first and favorite Bond film, I’ll listen to that one and decide if I’m staying or not. Needless to say that one blew me away and here I am. Love the pod, this is probably my favorite podcast right now.

I know I'm late to this party but I love this damn podcast. It is unacceptable, however, that Mz. Bouvier went from absolute smokeshow in purple to disparaged prom date in an azure abomination. I was not prepared for this disturbing transition.

if anyone is on the lookout for more Bond-related movies that feature explosive decompression i recommend Outland - the movie where Sean Connery plays a space cop taking on a corporate drug conspiracy on one of Jupiter's moons. not the best movie ever made (it's just an old-fashioned western but in space) but it does feature multiple gory decompression accidents

This is a cracking episode, I love this podcast... but I am begging you, please, listen to a single Welsh Person (tm). Timothy Dalton doesn't have a Welsh accent as Bond (though that would be cool if he did! and Abi's Welsh impression is a lot of fun). FWIW, Dalton was born in Wales but moved away when he was 5 or something, and I don't think his family is Welsh.
Guess this is what happens when you have a podcast about British Nonce Icon (and canonically Scottish-Swiss) James Bond, hosted by a Geordie, Devonian and a Londoner?/Glaswegian?

I went to a pub quiz last night, and helped my team ace the James Bond Trivia round despite never watching a single one of those movies. Thank you for your service comrades.

Yeah it's really weird that the same guy came back to do a turn as Felix Leiter after sixteen years.

I actively choose to believe Pam & Lupe's arc is not 'two women get the hots for Bond and compete with each other,' it is 'two women meet each other via Bond and fall in love with each other.' They are jealous -- but of Bond!

Dalton's Bond laughs like an outboard motor in need of an oil change, tbh.

I don't know if its just a strange coincidence or if the same guys were involved but fifteen years after this both a motorcycle driving on the great wall of china and a fight in a terracotta soldier chamber occurred in notable movie nobody asked for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider 2: The Cradle of Life

Man, Dario really could have been one of the great recurring henchmen. Benicio del Toro's flair on taking out his knife is just perfect. Also, fan nomination for the Kronsteen Rosette, Swordfish Guy.

Abi nails the Die Another Day quote when talking about Killifer!
Q is a field agent and Bond plays M, dudes rock!
Felix was the same guy that was in Live and Let Die, I'm surprised they didn't drop the Give the make on a white pimpmobile drop! Also the way you say The Felix Lighter, makes it sound like a new award!
Also when Dalton says the latin name for a great line shark, he drops some hard Rs. Goodbye, you magnificent bastard!

as someone who grew up in the southern united states, the i am not 100% certain if the garter thing is just a thing there, but at the weddings i went to when i was a kid the garter would be tossed for the men and the bouquet for the women, cuz they have to do these things by gender for no reason. and as a young kid before i realized i was trans i caught the garter and was subject to lots of jokes that were really gross looking back on it considering my age

I remember this from my cousins wedding a couple years ago at the reception, all I remember was sitting at a table waiting to help my grandma take my great grandma to the hotel we were staying at and I look over and see the groom under her dress and in my head went "what in straight hell is going on over there"

The garter thing is A Thing at some weddings. The bride throws the bouquet for the bridesmaids and... *sigh* the groom pulls the garter of his wife, often with his teeth and then shoots it like a rubber band over his shoulder for the groomsmen. It's very heterosexual nonsense imho.

Fun fact: this was the first Bond movie I ever saw in its entirety. Sometime when I was 9 or 10, BBC America was on in my house for some reason and was showing a Bond marathon. And sheltered little me who almost never watched anything above a PG thought it would be fun to watch the movie that was just starting. Needless to say, it was a LONG time before I watched another Bond movie again.
Timmy (as I affectionately call him) is by far my favorite Bond, so these last two (free) episodes have been an absolute blast to listen to. Hopefully you'll go back and do some other Dalton films for bonus episodes. Like, Looney Tunes Back In Action would be PERFECT for a bonus ep.

I love the remixes on Devon and Abi's voice, great reference to the style at the time. I would've worn an onion on my belt, but that's just me.

They should have had Robert Davi do the theme song in his Sinatra voice.

I'm certain the song Licence to Kill was a closing theme shifted to the opening. You say it overstays its welcome and that was the *cut* version of it. On top of that, it just gives off this strong feeling of finality.
