S2E11: Jennifer's Body

It's a very spooky halloween spooktactular as we turn our vision towards a subject few would dare discuss: Teenage girls! Writer, Youtuber, Podcaster and Elected Government Official (Swedish) Mia Mulder joins us to ask one very simple question: Is this movie about 9/11? The answer is yes, by the way. It is.

S2E11: Jennifer's Body

Comments

Tapping in years late to confirm the movie is not in fact about 9/11. I’ll chalk the errors up to none of them being American and not really knowing what America was like in the 2000s

Joseph

I just realized something. At least to Nova’s mind, Chip is Colin Powell.

Ineloquent Reverie

Any update on November and Mia doing a podcast together?

Beach Boy Sammy

Incidentally, Megan Fox now has a trans (or at least gender non-conforming) kid, who she appears to be very supportive of

lousullivan.bf

I watched this movie before listening to the episode. I am also a Dev. (The first three letters of my name are dev) and I'm also a little baby (as Dev mentioned they were) This podcast inspired me to watch this movie, finally. Worth it, in spite of having to look away during the gory bits.

Her Fierceness

They’ve mentioned the idea of doing a podcast together before on an episode of wtyp (the Hindenburg episode, highly recommend)

Fern

This has been bothering me all winter. Oil is NOT ferromagnetic. It's not any other kind of magnetic, either.

OvO Hoot

love the arc Alice goes through on this episode. “You’re all insane, this movie isn’t about 9/11”. “It’s using 9/11 imagery because it was made in the early 2000’s and is more illustrative of small-town grief” “It’s a minor theme.” “oh pshaw, I know you’re going to insinuate that Needy using a boxcutter is a 9/11 allusion. Wait shit.” “It was an illegal kill squad!”

ThighPaigestess

Jennifer’s body is not a movie about 9/11, it’s a movie which takes place in a post 9/11 world, and doesn’t shy away from it

Amy Rose

I hope you will make a episode of Bit, sometime :)

Angerboda

It's weird how many people who were definitely around after 9/11 and were probably bombarded with American media of the time think this is a 9/11 movie instead of a movie that's basically using it as a backdrop. Tons of satirical media at the time would reference it because it was so inescapable, plus just enough time had passed and the reaction to the Iraq War had been so negative they could get away with making fun of it more than you could have in like, 2003 or 2005. The movie was way more about performative mourning than 9/11. It was just a useful cultural reference point for mocking it. Also, if you've seen a lot of Diablo Codie stuff from back in the day, and the things she wrote, and the things she said around her work, she's a very aughts style feminist and Alice's reading of it getting scared of it's own extreme response to patriarchy is probably the more accurate read of what happens to Jennifer.

Lori Butcher

Fair, but if you've seen her tweets then you know that actually everything is about jk growling.

Cate Kneale

This was a great episode thanks

Ed Bevan

I love "boy-run media" for the very 2nd wave 1970s-ass reason of using the same kind of language to talk down to men the same way adult women are talked down to by being called "girls". I feel like "patriarchal media" or like "man-run media" has more connotations of like Power and Intent, like Dudes in Suits In A Board Room whereas "boy-run media" gives much more "scared male children crying wolf to get their way". GOD I love this movie

Lee Aldowaldo

Commenting for the first time to say that I watched this movie months ago and 100% had both the trans/lesbian and 9/11 readings of it, everyone but Alice on this podcast is right and I 100% want more analysis of this movie to talk about it. Plus, to also poke a bit at Alice's "Official Narrative Believer" status, I'll point out that I got the implication that the band and/or whatever demons they were working with caused the fire as cover to abduct Jennifer. That gives me the extra interesting reading that Jennifer might represent the people of Iraq and Afghanistan that end up being victimized by the CIA/MIC after 9/11, but also eventually hunted and killed by Needy (the American public) who sees her as the monster instead of going after the people really responsible.

Geckonator

Pat Tillman was also killed accidentally by friendly fire. Which the top brass tried to haphazardly cover up, because they knew it could devastate their recruiting narrative. Which all just deepens the irony.

Kate

While we're talking about 9/11, Pat Tillman was a professional football player who went to war after the attacks, got killed, and then got turned into a figurehead and recruiting tool for the millitary. No relation to this at all, obviously. Dunno why I even brought it up.

Xavier Daughenbaugh

I would absolutely love to listen to a Mia and Alice podcast. I have no idea what it would be about (other than 9/11 of course), but I suspect that it'd be amazing.

Sylvie

i read the sort of maudlin grief over tragedy as earnestly more of a heathers thing, i think alice is right in that its about the sort of small town american culture where everyone is trying to affect the proprietousness of their grief, which is something you have to do with small town america and more specifically with small town american high schools, the fact that tragedy in the us is kind of inexorably tied to 9/11 is somewhat undercut by everything in the us, especially media being about 9/11 in some sense, 9/11 just becomes a sort of synecdoche for tragedy in general in all american media post 2001, im not sure therefore that its about 9/11 any more than its about the oklahoma city bombing, say

Me, emotionally devastated from imposter syndrome after Hedwig and the Angry Inch: This movie has to be 100% about 9/11. Nothing trans-related, just 9/11.

gerewodezyakyry

This movie is definitely about misplaced and performative grief. My favorite scene is actually only in the extended edition! https://youtu.be/6ysQYM7OldM It’s Colin’s friends at his funeral being goth and overly dramatic about his death, to which his mom snaps back. It’s so good and I wish it had been in the regular version!

Samariel Hastur

Waiting for a "That body of yours is just absurd" joke

Twi

When I watched this movie the vision of Megan fox levitating and yelling "why must you undermine everything I do?" was seared into my mind for weeks

brodie

Is Chip really supposed to intuit that the girl he's having sex with is psychically linked to someone else?

Ben Schwabe

Can’t believe they made a lesbian movie about 9/11

Ramona Mantegani

Here for the 9/11 tag

Eric Adams (German)

Slaps without having even seen the movie

This is indisputably my favorite part of the Alice Caldwell-Kelly extended podcast universe. Thank you

Mark Hardgrove

Malice Coldskull-Scary

The Good Poster

Oh thank god I'm not the only person who thinks this movie is about 9/11.

DangCat

Everything is about 9/11. Except 9/11, which is about bottom surgery.

Hawxy

Everyone: This is a metaphor for 9/11 Alice: No! Also Alice: Needy has a box cutter Everyone: [Silence]

David L

MALICE Caldwell-SKULLY, Abi-GHOUL Thorn, and I guess Devon's scary enough on their own. Mia MOULDER if you want to go Crypt-keeper.
