S2E18.5: Speed Racer

As the Winter of Content comes to a close, we tackle the Wachowski Sisters' 2008 film adaptation of the 1960s anime Mach Gogogo! Recieved badly upon its' initial release, the film has since seen a renaissance and a critical reappraisal as a musing on art, artists, cycles of trauma, and what it truly means to create art under a capitalist system. It's also a movie about racing cars SO fast

Turns out the bit about beating the chimp for biting a child isn't strictly true. A chimp did bite a child near the beginning of production, and then was removed from set for some quiet time. They then went to extra efforts and expense to film Spritle and the chimp separately. Then, late in production, a trainer hit a chimp in a training session. The animal wasn't injured, but it was enough to give the film an Unacceptable rating despite the otherwise good production practices. The whole report is really interesting! https://humanehollywood.org/production/speed-racer/

i had several of the lego sets for this movie, and played the tie-in DS game soooo much. it's definitely not a good movie but like Titan AE, bad movies can be a fun childhood memory.

I watched this last night with my wife, and honestly I think it'd be a perfect movie to watch on psychedelics. The color balance is right for it, all the weird shit just becomes entertaining while that fucked up and it has good messaging and vibes.

The focus on driver safety in the movie contrasts starkly with the cartoon (at least as it was in America, which was the version I had on CD as a child), where people would JUST fucking. die from encounters with or just near the increasingly callous and unemotional Speed Racer who just doesn't really react at all. You'll be watching Jupiter Ascending as well then, yes? I'm not sure what to think about that film and I need some KJB assistance. Is it bad, is it good but with a total lack of chemistry between the leads? Please tell me.

Might want to ask Dominic Monaghan why Mathew Fox's career didn't pop after Lost
