S2E21: The Man From UNCLE (2015)

Well lads, this is it. We're finally at the end of the UNCLE films. A bittersweet send-off as we watch a genuinely quite solid reboot movie, but one whos' sequel hook will forever remain unfulfilled. CIA guy Napoleon Solo (Massive) finds himself forced to team up with KJB operative Ilya Kuryakin (Massive, also) to find some nazi guy or whatever. I think.

The aircraft carrier is actually the HMS Hermes, and looks *exactly* as it did at the time!

If you want a silly one-off spy movie then you have to give Bullshot a go.British parody of 1930s spy/detective films, originally a stage play, made into a film on a budget of about £3.99. Attempts to take on the British class system, mostly fails and catches a heavy dose of Starship Troopers/Sucker Punch syndrome along with way. You'll have a ball with it.

Moray Macdonald

I maintain my advocacy for the tinkertailorverse as the next place to go, but whatever strikes your fancy As for this movie, the fashion in it, gorgeous, so many beautiful dresses and great fits all around, ngl I sympathise with Abi's position as I like a lot of Viktoria's

Christine Pizan

Or Night Lords' lore. "Hey Cavill, let me tell you about this Screaming Gallery thing"

Noblesse Oblahaj

Ooooooh that's a blast from the past! Thanks for reminding me that existed!!

Playslashwrite

Now, the bit about Cavill trying to get Armie Hammer into 40K and failing was funny, but I personally find it much funnier to imagine Cavill trying to get Armie Hammer into 40K and *succeeding* - and then getting slightly concerned about how intensely Armie starts binging Emperor's Children lore.

ZombieDwarf

Also who is your favorite character and why is it Khairn

Noblesse Oblahaj

Devon- who is your favorite black library author, and do you feel any of the books explore transhumanism in an interesting way?

Noblesse Oblahaj

I think he just understands that the business of making anything in hollywood is very nasty and he just tries to avoid drama, look at the whole fight over whether he would have a mustache or not for reshoots

scara b

that Buster Keaton with his Rami Malek looking face

scara b

if KJB gets into heist movies then i NEED to hear the gang's take on Den Of Thieves. genuinely SO much going on with american masculinity in that movie

Karl Childers

I can't wait for the silent movie season of KJB. You can really let loose about Douglas Fairbanks.

Ctolm [the t is silent]

I've got SO MANY suggestions! I don't think you ever did The Tailor of Panama, to see what Pierce Brosnan does with a Le Carré spy film. For a more lighthearted movie about how fucked up spies are, the the Coen Brothers' Burn After Reading, which is all about CIA clowns. A much more serious movie about surveillance and paranoia, that would be a great companion piece to The Lives of Others: Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation. Ever since I started listening, I've wanted to hear your take o Grosse Pointe Blank. Or continuing with the tradition of doing the second film of a series, there's the Get Smart reboot... whose second film is "Get Smart's Bruce and Lloyd: Out of Control".

JoeNotCharles

Also - if you're looking for a fun one-off spy movie that's a wlw classic, I BEG you to do DEBS!

Lauren Shear

If you are doing heist movies, I strongly suggest Logan Lucky! It's got Daniel Craig having the most fun ever until Benoit Blanc, not to mention Channing Tatum and Adam Driver who are also delightful. It's genuinely funny, explores southern US machismo in interesting ways, and is just super creative and fun.

Lauren Shear

you outed yourself on this one

Wuppdich

if you're looking for 1-off spy movies you should do Spies Like Us, it would have fit in better after Living Daylights but I had exactly 2 dvd's as a kid, harry potter 1, and this and its more watchable than critics claim

scara b

Also you say it was a set up for a sequel, but weirdly, they actually show the mission in Istanbul in yhe photo slides how in the end credits! I didn't realise till about my third watch

Alex Twinspark

What is actually quite sad is that the actors and team behind this film actually did want to make a second one, to my knowledge they had even started working on a script for it...and then Armie did...well...that.

Alex Twinspark

I end up laughing so hard when listening to this podcast that I have to be careful where and when I listen. Because even if I could stop laughing enough to explain something that they just said, that wouldn’t make people less angry/disturbed. I loved this episode so much. When the Cavill Warhammer goodness starts, I hope they cover it.

Emily Kugler

I quite liked this one when it came out and feel it's quite underrated! The actors have great chemistry and they seemed to be enjoying themselves a lot throughout. Such a shame we'll probably never see a continuation of this, because it had real potential!

Playslashwrite

I just realized that the 40k show/film I want Cavill to make is a Gaunts's Ghosts one

Cam

Also, this movie is trashy but like its like getting adderall when i am addictd to the hard meth of guiy ritchies king arthur, my personal So bad its great movie that I'm surprised y'all didn't mention.

theunderwolf

hey hi, I feel very attacked as a warhammer infodumper

theunderwolf

TBH If Henry Cavill took a trans girl back to his room she would probably be into it. Yes daddy tell me how excited you are for 10th edition. Do you want to see my space marines? 👉👈

Angel-of-Deadlifts

The stuff around Cavill is lightly interesting to me because, to my understanding, there's nothing concrete about anything really cancel-able but lots of weird pink-to-red flags. The Witcher set rumors seem to mostly be along the lines of Netflix producers and writers really not giving a shit about the source material and having a grudge against Cavill for liking it and trying to get them to follow it... but also he kind of acted like a dick towards everyone on set in retaliation? And those older, weird comments around #MeToo and feeling like he had to avoid dating because of it? He's such a strange figure to me. Like if you put the typical lonely, fictional universe-obsessed teenage video game nerd in the jacked body and lucrative career of the ideal male actor. He played Superman, for God's sake! And yet he still seems to have an aversion to social compromise, adult relationships with women... He's like a character from a psychoanalytical novel.

Geckonator

Not a spy movie but The Old Guard is a fun watch. It has Charlize Theron in it who does fit into the traditional Beaty standard of Hollywood films and also has Kiki Layne. But the roles they play are that of soldiers and so most of the emphasis is placed on their strength, smarts and skill sets. On the other end of that is Atomic Blond, which does have a male gaze emphasis in parts but overal is a good spy movie with some very good action (akin to John Wick)

Speaking of dumb action movies which were clearly meant to kickstart franchises - The Losers. I REALLY wanted a sequel to that! (It might make a good podcast episode...)

Evie Moon

i feel like this intro kinda downplays the fact that cavil has some of workplace misconduct allegations specifically towards women hanging around him right now, so like, he's also kinda getting cancelled, that's why he got dropped from the witcher, if i'm not mistaken. just thought y'all might wanna know, especially since he kinda seems gamergatey (but i could be mistaken)

Curatrix Ribston

A great pick! From the wiki: “the most pies ever filmed in a pie fight”

Tall Jeff

I kinda want to see a season that's a double-feature of two episodes Man from UNCLE for the entire season. Or perhaps The Prisoner.

Simon Bitdiddle

you should do The Great Race! It's 60s set in the 1910s, and it's got an American Woman, a gay henchman, a very horny fencing scene, a campy bondesque protagonist called The Great Lesley, and some terrible opinions about women.

Rom Brook-Hart

I kinda want them to do a compare-and-contrast between the two just to see how the presentation of the ideology has changed.

Simon Bitdiddle

soon we will reach the coveted All-Libel Episode

Jack Connell

The first KJB ep with a Libel Intermission lmao

The Good Poster

I’m gonna repeat that “Tinker, Tailor…” in both the Alec Guinness and Oldman editions deserves thorough-going KJB analysis.

John Harwood

I'm going to keep recommending it since I've done it on Twitch too, but as a one shot spy movie I'd recommend Atomic Blonde if for no other reason than to see either Abi or Alice go completely feral.

Frontlinecaster

I fucking love how much in this show a punchline needs to be bleeped, it adds so much. Plus, I'm usually missing the context to understand what the bleeped section is, but the others reactions is what makes it!

Rosemary Roach

Weird how this episode is just a continuous one hour, thirty-nine minute, and 11 second bleep

Brian Danger Hicks

I remember wanting to see this at 13 but not being able to get a friend to come see it with me. I also had assumed that it was Fassbender rather than Armie Hammer this entire time - so there's your recast for the sequel

Chaos Merlin

Get Smart is a oneshot spy movie. Not a good movie but still...

Orlando

simply start watching Uncle again

I'm honestly massively surprised you guys didn't pick up on the projector that doesn't work during Kuryakin's briefing on Solo!

Alex Twinspark

The entire WH40K interlude here is absolutely destroying me

Alex Anderson

This is my most hotly anticipated episode yet
