S2E29: Rambo

It's the fourth Rambo film.
Sylvester Stallone reckons this is 'the best film he's ever made' because it's 'the most truthful'.

We reckon it's the worst movie we've ever seen.

------

THE MOVIES ARE ON STRIKE!

SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are both on strike for a number of reasons, from pay for streaming residuals, to the rights to own your own appearance, to the right to not have AIs trained off your work.

So if you've got a few spare pennies, why not chip in to help keep movies from becoming Shit Forever.

And if you're in the UK, the UCU could still do with some help

S2E29: Rambo

i recently re-listened to the first couple episodes and in there you talk about scaling SCUM proportionally to account for the later Bonds. clearly nobody was prepared for Rambo.

I'm struck by ultraviolence as p*rnography for the impotent and incels. An analyst would have a field day. It's similar to the Evangelical focus on punishment, and love depicting hellish torture.

Kisa

A24 isn't struck

Liz and Ash in Florida. It's very hot! Climate change will kill us all.

(*it's a film version not just a taping of the Broadway show but retaining most of the features)

Julian Pollock

Mondosuggestion for I think after the strike ends although I'm not totally sure whether this film was union bc it was an Indy taping of a Broadway musical: Zoot Suit with Edward James Olmos is perfect for the show.

Julian Pollock

Yeah, I've got a forehead dent from forceps (though no other obvious damage) so I get real uncomfortable with them going after Stallone for the physical side of things.

Miss Norris

Its sudden switch from “roaring non-lethal rampage of revenge” to “actually, you should contact the police because they’re the real heroes” at the climax would definitely be food for an interesting discussion.

Erik Traudes

For the season of solidarity I'd like to renew my suggestion of Michael Collins. It's got everything: An oceans are now battlefields type opening crawl, trains, British security forces getting got. What more could you want?

Ctolm [the t is silent]

I had been hoping for a while to get an episode on Norwegian Ninja (Kommandør Treholt & ninjatroppen). It has ninjas and Operation Gladio, though unfortunately I don't think it has any blondes with American accents.

Brian Danger Hicks

I guess you'll have a while to recover while waiting for the strike to end, at least. Hope the studios cave quickly!

JoeNotCharles

I recently saw someone hold up Rocky Balboa as a "surprising" example of a positive male role model. If you're not too burned out on Stallone, it would be great to see you do the Rocky movies. At the very least I think they'd have more mixed things to say than the deflating whoopie cushion sound of the Rambo movies.

JoeNotCharles

GO BOLLYWOOD. GO WITH HAIDER. HAMLET SET IN THE KASHMIR CONFLICT CMONNNNN (RRR has questionable politics and caste views so if you are doing that please read up on that!)

Borbachev

Regarding French films, I'd like to hear your take on Costa-Gavras "Z" about the murder of the Greek politician Grigoris Lambrakis in the climate of rising fascism.

quantumsquid

Would love to see y'all talk through the Russian film Страна Глухих (Country of the Deaf)

Ellie Osterman

Furie the 2019 Vietnamese film might be worth a look as I don't think it's struck.

Anthony

Another great Weinstein Company film

Trevor Gilmore

The thing that frustrates me the most about Rambo 4: Rambo is that this came out a couple years after Rocky Balboa, an actually good film, maybe the 2nd or 3rd best non-Creed Rocky. So it was obvious that Sly knew how to make a great film that revisited one of his classic characters, but this inexplicably Evangelical hyperviolent right wing screed is the direction he decided to go with.

Kevin Mark Bradshaw

Was watching that last night and my God does it have things to say about masculinity.

Jon W

Give us the RRR episode!

Jon W

Also I’m Kinda drunk leaving this comment so this is not a parasocial thing just a suggestion I’d appreciate, like if mia mulder and alice could review HOI4 Mods i dont know the broad appeal but i'd listen

Alex Boag

Just wanna point out to Abby, Ciarán of the Corner Späti promised (on twitter to me) to bring the most fucked up vibes if you do the lupin the 3rd yearly specials, not sure if that’s a positive or negative. and boy oh boy do they have gender and sexual politics at times. So like if Abby or dev wants to dive in to the lupin specials you have at least one guest and one listener for it.

Alex Boag

brain references that never came: the scene of comically numbing violence was the old Monty Python sketch "Sam Peckinpah's Salad Days". Furthermore, Strongbad referencing his band of shady missionaries

karpad

Stoked for non-US film content, too! May I suggest: Riki-Oh! The Story of Riki.

Bappy Lorenzo

After that episode, my self enforced (inflected) habit of watching the film critiqued seems like a bad idea now.. I may report back on my findings..

mortran

banging my hands on the table ALEKSANDR PTUSHKO ALEKSANDR PTUSHKO

God's Eepiest Soldier

A film along similar lines would be NZ classic Sleeping Dogs, the film that was pod-favorite Sam Neill's big break. It's set in a near-future New Zealand which is sliding into a fascist police state. Could make for an interesting double feature.

BarFly

great episode as always, cool to see the SCUM record finally broken. just wanted to mention one thing related to the rambo series as a whole, which is that stallone talks like that because when he was born the doctor went too hard on the forceps and gave him facial nerve damage. as such, it's kinda shitty whenever you make fun of his slurred line deliveries. not to defend this guy and his incredibly fascist film series, but i wasn't sure if you were aware. apart from that, great episode, looking forward to next week

i once heard a podcaster assume the spice channel was associated with the spice girls

As a Burmese river estuary pirate police currently under machine gun fire, I find it very rude that KJB has insofar not responded to my emails.

Alex

Rambo 4 but the Geezer 'ard Bastard is played by Miriam Margolyes

BarFly

“Tertiary Rambosis” 😆

John Harwood

Also check out Eega by the same director: John Wick but the hero is a house fly

Nick Alexander

Praying that RRR makes it into the Season of Solidarity

Nick Alexander

Relatedly, there might be triggering content issues but otherwise it would be interesting to dig into the Female Prisoner Scorpion series

Nah

Hell yeah non-Hollywood season. It's finally time for you to do the movie that says the most about masculinity that any movie ever has, the whirlwind delerium epic of Catholic upskirt photography, cultist katana fights and casually addressed egg-cracking, the actual roughly 80th highest rated movie of all time on Letterboxd, Love Exposure.

Nah

tell you what every time i was a pirated movive made by hollywood i'll donate a movie tickets worth of mony to the union

Alfred Lang

Can I put in my vote for Kwaidan if you can find it? It's horror anthology (4 stories) but it's also just a beautiful movie on the visuals.

Tegan Thompson

Hell yeah union strong. Having heard Abby mention New Zealand cinema, gonna throw a recommendation out: Muru. Stars guy-you-love-to-see Cliff Curtis as a country cop, whose town is targeted by bigger cops and the government after a group is overheard making threats (real or fake?) towards the Prime Minister. The main target is played by an actual real-life activist who was jailed in events similar to those in the film, which is pretty sick. It’s incredibly good, has a lot to say, and says it so fucking angrily that it rules. Also, the opening title card says ‘the New Zealand police do not endorse what is depicted’.

Caleb O'Brien

I look forward for season of solidarity to inevitably cover the evangelion movies.

Hedrigal

This podcast is dedicated to the brave fighters of the mule-jahideen

Noblesse Oblahaj

does this mean we will finally get the Harry Palmer films lol

alice

Solidarity to the working people of the world!!

Jason Young

Shamelessly responding to the intro and the plans with the strikes: oh boy I can't wait to see if there's a brief check in with Soviet Cinema. There's gotta be something fun there that's not Tarkovsky or the big cinephile stuff
