S3E2.5: The Consequences of Love

Since our main episodes are so rigidly structured this season, our only condition for bonus episodes is that the films aren't struck. Alice has grabbed the opportunity with both hands to make us watch a film about a lonely italian man who refuses to talk to women.

THE MOVIES ARE ON STRIKE!

SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are both on strike for a number of reasons, from pay for streaming residuals, to the rights to own your own appearance, to the right to not have AIs trained off your work.

So if you've got a few spare pennies, why not chip in to help keep movies from becoming Shit Forever.

IATSE workers are struggling at the moment as well, as they can't work during the current strike actions but aren't themselves on strike- the Motion Picture Television Fund is a 501(c)3 charity that provides a range of assistance. https://mptf.com

Additionally, SAG and WGA members started another 501(c)3 charity called The Union Solidarity Coalition - https://tusctogether.com

And if you're in the UK, the UCU could still do with some help

I was feeling like this movie was a lot more nuanced and complicated until we got to the ending which shows him being a badass. The thing with these sorts of Incel "Literally Me" type movies is that they always portray the sad lonely guy as being a secret badass in some way as a power fantasy for the viewer who relates to them. But a real sad lonely Incel isn't a badass, they're more like this dude is throughout the rest of the movie; living a boring, monotonous life, avoiding any social interactions, and being a very uninteresting and unskilled looser. I figured this movie would be more about that more real aspect of this sort of life, but by giving him this badass ending, you essentially give the Incel viewer a placebo of personal change and agency. You can't just do a single cool thing and make up for your wasted life, as if you are even going to get the chance to do something that extreme anyways. Breaking out of this self-repressive cycle takes time and effort, and it's not as exciting or cool as these stories tend to portray it as. I suppose you could argue that the film agrees with this, as The Most Beautiful Woman in the World does crash the car he gave her on a whim, the broke couple he gives the money to will probably end up gambling it away anyways, and the Mafia really don't care that much that he's done this, essentially eliminating any accomplishments he made, but I don't think that the Incel viewer is going to see that. A better example of this sort of wasted life/lonely man story I think is "I'm Thinking of Ending Things", which is pretty uncompromising in its depiction if this sort of guy. His fantasy accomplishments remain fantasies, he doesn't change, doesn't receive any redemption, and simply dies as sad and alone as he lived. I feel like that sort of depiction of this lifestyle and sort of person is a lot more realistic and impactful, as it doesn't give the same sort of placebo satisfaction that other films do.

It me, though. How does one exit gracefully?!?

Abi beatboxing 22 minutes in just flung my brain straight to the post office scene in Men In Black 2

MagneticRose

really precious whenever someone is honestly like "wait organized crime still exists in present year?"

Karl Childers

Abi being surprised at the various mafias still exerting control as if Matteo Salvini isn't trying to get that stupid Messina Strait bridge done precisely because it's what the mafia want.

Claudia

Weird, you mean the movie starts with a shot of the girl reading this?

Andrew Cumming

Love to see some Sorrentino love. His movies are hit or miss for me but when I like them I -really- like them. I didn't love Loro, his two-part movie about Berlusconi, but I think you'd have some interesting things to say about it.

Luca

If the choice is between being shot or changing planes in O'Hare I will open wide for the barrel of that gun 🔫

Trevor Gilmore

I THINK ALICE DIDN'T SIGH AT THE START IS THIS CORRECT??? MAY WE CELEBRATE???

Trevor Gilmore

This is the most a film you have discussed has made me want to go out and watch it since you covered Saloum. Sounds very cool

Christine Pizan

Man, I wish you could follow this up with either "The Remains of the Day" or "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" because there are some fucking parallels.

Zeroisanumber

Devon would never take a surname. In fact if they marry there partner's surname will be erased

Friend of the show

If that dasharez0ne meme was a guy

Mulloy

My immediate thought when you said there was something kind of english about this film went to The Remainder of the Day with Anthony Hopkins. Not sure if it's enough on theme/brand but it might lend itself to a cool discussion.

litenkolgrill

The thing is when you say "Devon and Abigail Thorn" it makes me think for a second they’re a married couple

Skate Bush

"When I was coming home from Chicago," yeah Devon O'Hare do be like that

uberperk

Damn I wish Italians were real 🙁

Tall Jeff

Excited!
