I sincerely think that most of the politicians playing the transphobia card don't genuinely believe we're a danger, it's purely about the political gain. This kind of thing has been done with many minority groups in the past. It's always the same general rhetoric, just with a different scapegoat.

I'm ancient now, I'm a cis woman in my fifties and there have always been trans people. Attitudes to LGBTQ people and our rights have been drastically improving over my lifetime and I don't know why we're being cunts now. It fucking sucks.
