S3E26.5: Klute

You know the drill, if we're silly on main we're being sensible on priv. Today's bonus episode concerns the 1971 Donald Sutherland/Jane Fonda thriller Klute. A small-town cop with zero working facial muscles travels to new york city to investigate his friend's disappearance. His only lead? A call girl who lives in fear of a stalker.

Hey, Devon here. For the past few months I've been talking to a family trapped in Gaza, working to cover their daily living costs amidst repeated displacements in the Genocide. Their names are Ahmed and Layla, and their 4 kids are Jana, Malik, Lana and Amir. Anything you can contribute would mean the world to me. They deserve to live. They deserve to survive.

I was looking up this movie and found out the swedish title is "Klute - en smart snut" (a smart cop) I don't know why they decided to give a thriller a cute rhyming comedy title

I hate christmas music so much

I always lick the cat food spoon

Even Oddridge

"who's there" I say, before taking out a flashlight the size of my thumb and annihilating my stalker with a 10,000 lumen kamehameha blast

Noblesse Oblahaj

Somewhere out there are people who desperately want a creepy phone call and lose their minds when they hear the words "your car's extended warranty"

Going into this podcast, my only knowledge of this film was that when I was a teen in the 80s, I said I really wanted to see Clue. My father was horrified as he thought I was talking about Klute.

Sublight Monster

Every time y'all reference Aunty Donna my Australian heart grows 3 sizes ♥️

You just start tagging the not-totally-main-feed-related episodes with like…KJB Film Club because I do feel like I had a great time at a quite intelligent and thoughtful film club meeting!

Rune

Great link. I love that it came to zero consensus but floats basically every imaginable interpretation. I think we need input from folks who were sexually active adults at the time who were also engaging in more fringe scenes. I had the feeling from the post it was a lot of modern folks seeking modern definitions for something quite possibly tightly framed by time and context.

Knights Who Say Sledge

IN FABRIC IS A MARXIST NEO-GIALLO MOVIE ABOUT SINISTER LESBIANS it is 100% podcast appropriate

John Leavitt

I was just about to say, the fact that they didn't call it that makes me wonder if they were intentionally not invoking it and letting us fill in the blanks ourselves

Andrew Dunn

I think Devon would enjoy The Seven Ups

BarFly

CP is common prostitute. It’s an old legal term. I think the implication is they arrested her for being a prostitute as opposed to engaging in an act of prostitution. So basic police harassment.

Jacob King

if you enjoyed fonda’s performance here, i would recommend “They Shoot Horses Don’t They?” which is not perfect but does have Fonda and her co-stars being put through hell and going absolutely ham

QuoProQuid

Thanks, I've been thinking about semiotics a lot lately...

Cate Kneale

That…might actually be a decent read.

Mr. Venom

in the middle of november and devon making fun of the name john klute my mother pulled up a picture of mike rutherford (middle names john cloete - pronounced klute)

Righteous Lazarus (Four Days Dead)

I've been meaning to watch this, it's on a few streaming sites.

Jason Young

Imagining Devon and Nova on the mic with puppet strings to a sinister ghostly super sized Abby cackling madly.

Jon W

I was wondering who chose this, then I saw it was an 60s/70s psychosexual depressing movie featuring a glamorous actress and immediately assumed “November”

Charlie Banwell

Always brace myself whenever I hear an actor attempt an Irish accent 😅

Here’s a thread of people discussing “button freak” between the years of 2006 and 2020 https://filmboards.com/t/Klute/A-'button-freak%3F'-1779441/

Jess Price

He doesn’t get nearly the recognition he deserves. He’s been in some of the all-time greats, and has always been great in them. Platinum-tier guy I love to see.

Brian Taulbee

Is she literally a kitten, is that what the cat food and the scruff of the neck holds are about? The 70s were so not a good time, except house prices and quaaludes, obviously.

Cate Kneale

Devon and Nova's primary criticism of the film: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sFBhR4QcBtE

Nirvana's replacement frontman

Roy Schider rec if you ever want more Roy, fuckin Bob Fosse directed All That Jazz, which is very much a quasi autobiography movie about Bob Fosse and maybe the most self loathing movie ever made. No one hates themselves like Bob Fosse, it is fucking UNREAL and roy fuckin kills it in the movie, he is so good

Winson Paine

10 hours of silence randomly interrupted by a metal pipe smashing through your window and impaling your skull like a toothpick through a cheese cube on an hors d'oeuvre platter

Jack

Really surprised it wasn’t mentioned that Candy Darling is in one scene of this movie

Moon Walker

This makes absolutely no sense, I'm sorry😅

Alexander Baez Ubeira

"Diabolik was in many ways Johnny Italian" [Under my breath] 'Johnny Ndemonic was right there' "We have reinstated the death penalty for hacking and Welsh marine life trafficking"...

Alexander Baez Ubeira

Love the "Long Island Expressway" shoutout lol

Justine

4:40 Is that the irl pipe that kills you instantly?

Beatrix Bunny

I saw Roy Scheider in a white jacket in the photo and didn't even register Jane Fonda or the title of the episode, my brain just went "Sorcerer (1977)? Sorcerer (1977) tonight queen?"

BarFly

Just gave to the gofundme, and gonna signal boost it what little I can
